Re: 1499: "Arbitrage"

I think he's overestimating the arbitrage potential. Chips that have been taken out of the packet, left on a table, and potentially coughed and sneezed on probably lack both fungibility and liquidity. It's not clear that he will be able to sell them You don't think he's found a supply of empty chip...

Hot Tub Time Machine (not the sequel) did 2010 to 1986, is that close enough?

Re: 1360: "Old Files"

My neighbor has enough old files in her "My Documents" folder that she doesn't have the time/willpower to go through them anymore -- so instead, whenever she upgrades to a new machine, she just does a "Compress Archive" of her "My Documents" folder to make a .zip file o...

Obama and Hillary both seemed like a good choice. So I was actually disappointed Hillary dropped out. Why didn't McCain drop out? He was obviously the worst choice and if he would drop out, people would no longer have to worry about the elections! I know better now. ;) (at least I would hope so) It...

I'm probably just bitter because I was a big BeOS fan back in the day, but it seems to me that today's behemoths (Apple, Google, Amazon, etc) aren't problematic in quite the same way that Microsoft was in the '90s. In particular, today's tech companies generally compete by developing and selling bet...

Under-promotion makes sense. It's a metaphor for a person who moves up in life, but in doing so moves up to a position which best serves his kingdom. I always thought that under-promotion was necessary for people who had only one chess set handy, and therefore didn't have a spare queen piece availa...

The other option is to reboot the Mac into Windows via Boot Camp. No slowdown that way (except that you have to wait for Windows to boot, of course).

Better to take a big risk I think; let's catapult ourselves beyond the farthest star on a desperate hope that the brighter future we've imagined is indeed out there somewhere. When the bottom finally falls out on the economy and these revolts turn into WW3 we're going to realize the future lasted from 1955 - 2010. Now we're living in the soon to be, war torn waste land of the future. Blessed are the pessimists, for they are the ones most likely to be pleasantly surprised.

The Windows default shell is the MS-DOS Command Prompt.

Ergo, Windows loses. Seriously, Microsoft, it's 2010. Isn't it time to upgrade your default shell to at least circa-1980's quality?
