Re: Strange local network transmission

my immediate reaction is: anyone know what nmap -sV looks like? nmap is of course the port mapping tool; when run with -sV it tried to do service detection on the open ports it finds by connecting to them and a) seeing what they say, b) sending stuff and seeing what they say back. i seem to recall, ...

Re: Internet Explorer 9

at least there's a decent reason this time: the hardware acceleration requires WDDM (new display driver model introduced in vista; the initial inability of nvidia and ati to get to grips with it is what caused 90% of vista bluescreens) which means it doesn't work on XP either and only works on vista...

Re: Online vote for new Oprah show rigged

surely the most likely explanation is:

- coder notices mass automated voting going on
- coder attempts to eliminate mass automated voting by tying each vote to a unique ID
- coder screws up colossally
- coder reverts changes

Re: SCOTUS: Group can't bar gays and receive funding

I was under the impression that religious organizations are, in large parts of Europe, subsidized by the state. So you end up with an official Christian church, an official Muslim establishment, an official rabbinate for the Jews, etc, and someone belonging to a religious group outside those establ...

From everyone else who's used it on machines with even 2GB of RAM and a 3ghz CPU and found themselves waiting 5-10 minutes for it to boot up and be ready to use? windows -> type "Performance information and tools" (or as much of it as you need to) -> advanced -> view performance details i...

#xkcd IRC Issues

just in case anyone else runs into this; McAfee virusscan includes crude firewall-esque features that block outgoing comms on port 6667 by default (many botnets use IRC as a command and control system) so if you can't get to ANY network on the standard port, that could be why

Re: "SUV" Discussion

anyone have any recent info on diesel/hydraulic hybrids? The idea is a diesel engine pressurises a hydraulic canister which powers the car. First point is that the engine can operate at its most efficient speed all the time but the main point is that the tank can also be pressurised by regenerative ...

Yes, I am the author, and thanks. Simulating a second universe and transferring yourself into it is a great next step. But note: be careful not to transfer yourself into an alternate universe without a means of returning home!! That wasn't quite what I meant. I meant that right now the characters h...

Besides, Ender's game is hardly obscure. It's classic Sci-fi. the only reason I've heard of it is reading the "other books by this author, that you'll never find them in the shops" bit in the back of the Alvin Maker books. I know one other person who's vaguely heard of the book. It ain't ...
