### Re: Extracting energy from a black hole via gravitational blueshift

While that's also an important factor, I already explained that simply increasing the mass would itself have an effect on the dynamics of the system By changing the pull on the black hole by the satellite? Yeah, that too. though not, I think, in a way that by itself proves you can't get energy out ...

### Re: Extracting energy from a black hole via gravitational blueshift

Ok, i've realized why the increase in mass is important here. The added mass does not have any momentum in the current direction of the satellite, and since momentum is conserved the satellite will slow down, lowering its apoapsis and, if you repeat the process, changes its orbit closer and closer t...

### Re: Extracting energy from a black hole via gravitational blueshift

That's true for a constant mass, but you're adding and removing mass mid-flight. It's true for a Ferris wheel that (ignoring friction) it will keep its rotational speed forever, regardless of mass. But if you start loading cinder blocks at the bottom and unloading them at the top, the wheel will sl...

### Re: Extracting energy from a black hole via gravitational blueshift

It’s not the time dilation where you lose the energy again—it’s plain old e = m * c^2. Your satellite climbing out of the gravity well is heavier by an amount equal to the energy gained by the photon. What does that impact though? The mass of a satellite has no bearing on its orbit, right? (As long...

### Extracting energy from a black hole via gravitational blueshift

cheat.png We have a satellite at a highly eccentric orbit (A) around a black hole. We also have a satellite or a number of satellites at a low-eccentricity orbit (B) higher than A. At A's periapsis it is sent a laser beam which gets highly blueshifted from the black hole and therefore more energeti...

### Global video delay

A while back i upgraded most of my pc hardware; everything except motherboard, cpu and monitor. Everything worked smoothly. But shortly after - i think in conjunction with plugging in a new set of speakers - all video suddenly suffered a noticable delay. It's weird, cause i've had random audio delay...

### Coin flip problem

I came up with a problem that i haven't been able to solve myself. If you flip a coin n times what is the probability that you will at some point have netted m more heads than tails? I tried graphing a P m (n), but i had included some outcomes more than once because the probability eventually equale...

Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. Behold, I lay yesternight wit...

Wow... xkcd is getting really obscure. As if everyone here would have happened to read the exact Peanuts comic that was being referenced here, because if you hadn't you would have no idea what the point of the comic is. Even now that I know, it's still not that funny. I miss when xkcd used to refer...

The Aluminium (its pronounced AL YOO MIN EEEE UMM ok - see the 'i' there ?) in the plane and exposed steel in the building may have caused additional Thermite reactions which would have caused little spikes up to 2500 Celsius in 'hot spots' if it occurred. Little known fact: the "i" is si...

I do like to use ocotopi as the plural form, but i don't know. Shouldn't the plural for vagina be vaginae?

### Re: 0858: "Milk"

Literally or not, the title text is implying that the woman is making a very safe bet that the guy is thinking about milking a woman (not just breasts in general; she gives a very specific use of them). No, that's not normal thinking. Maybe the joke is "Two people were thinking the same totall...
