Re: genetically engineered foods

Well, as far as I know, banana isn't a staple crop. Corn, wheat, and rice are now being made homogeneous - homogeneous potato was a major cause of the great irish potato famine. Anyway, we should be responsible about it. Monsanto has the opportunity to be a great company, but as a large corporation ...

Re: genetically engineered foods

I'm watching "the Future of Food" on Hulu - it's fairly good hour and a half coverage of the issue.

And to answer "why would you plant food that you lose money on?" - subsidies. Tho I don't want to comment on that much since I don't know how they work.

Re: genetically engineered foods

By far the biggest danger of GM crops is the use of homogeneous/monogeneous genetic crops. That is, a corn field has natural genetic variation which guards against it getting wiped out by some pest or weed that is effective against a certain specific plant. A GM corn field has all the same genetic m...

Re: The Chicago-area small n' cozy meetup (MEETUP 3: MARCH 21)

I'm up for april. "Earth" (a for-theater adaptation of "planet earth") is playing at the AMC river east on Apr 22. Just saying. I'm going to a yann tiersen concert the day before that. There is talk of some major demonstration in DC on the 24,25, and 26. Maybe we can hang out whi...

Re: How do you stop Genocide?

You could provide the people getting wiped out the means to defend themselves. As I understand it, it's kind of a tribal thing, and if you give the other side guns and such, they'll do the same thing to the other side. I wonder how economic stance could improve something for everyone. The people in...

Re: How do you stop Genocide?

Good point about the will power. It's just that western politics, and even groups such as "save Darfur" seem to think that, if only there were enough people cared or were willing to do something, this genocide could be stopped. So perhaps the question is, how do you convince the killers th...

How do you stop Genocide?

I'm watching "Bach in Aushwitz" on History (you can wiki it), and one woman is talking about how it's taken 2 generations for people to get the courage to ask questions. Interview survivors, really look into it. Anyway, she says that they want to tell their stories so people know what happ...

Re: What's causing high gas prices in the U.S.?

When production falls in other countries, Saudi Arabia has always been the one to pick up the slack. They have the infrastructure to produce millions of barrels per day extra if they need to. Except that they're not any more. The only countries that haven't hit peak oil yet are Saudi Arabia, Iraq, a...

Re: Most surreal thing you've ever seen...

On a band trip looking out the window, there was a FedEx Jumbo Jet (converted 747, IIRC) that appeared to be floating just a few hundred yards at the ground. I've seen it a couple of times since from far away, it's just a weird illusion from traveling in the opposite paralell direction, but it was t...

Meeting new people in a new town

I just moved to a slightly bigger city (100,000 up from 20,000) and I am friendless. I dearly miss my girlfriend but I can't spend my days moping around. I'll only be here til the end of august; then I'm moving to Chicago. I figure I ought to get good at meeting people. I've had 2 good friends for t...

Re: Beliefs That You Cannot Prove

I believe that everyone is inherently incredibly cynical and despises society for all it's worth. Every face I see looks fake to me. Everything people say is a formality, doing things because they think it's what they think they should do. No one wants to be here - but they're afraid of dissenting f...

I fuckin hate the red hot chili peppers. Say it ain't so! I'm a really old guy and I still think that "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" is epic. I think I'm okay with their old shit. I only have like one of their albums. The only time I've made it through more than 2 songs is looking at porn....

Re: Alone on New Year's Eve

I dropped my best friend off at her car at around 11 so she could pick up some of her "significant other"s friends and go out to his house so she can just be pissed off at how immature he is. All I can do is remind her why she loves him, because I want her to be happy with the guy that she...

I can click my tongue like a dolphin.
I don't bruise very easily.
Cracking ankle.
I get pimples in my ear lobes and sometimes in a more unfortunate place. Either hurts hella. Otherwise I'm pretty acne free.
I'm told I have a really big head. The other one.

I've been playing Trumpet for 5 years. I've had my Strad 37 for 4 of those years, I really love how much noise I can make with it. I play it in an alternative rock/experimental band, as well as the high school marching/jazz/concert. I'm planning on majoring it and playing around in chicago. Which wo...

Cognitive Psychology and Music

That's what really sparks my interest. Books explaining that "F# is the tri-tone to C, and is dissonant, while G is the Perfect 5th, and is consonant" are kind of boring. Books explaining that "the ratio of the frequency of F# : C is 43:32, and makes most people uncomfortable, while C...
