If their location is circa the Mediterranean, their language should have some roots in Greek, Italian, or French, no? Although all of those use a Latin or Greek (and thus easily recognizable) alphabet. Perhaps this is a nomad group? It's possible, but that doesn't mean you'd be able to recognize it...
