Re: "Actuarial" Discussion

But if you can do that, I discussed in the other thread about letting each life expectancy assume an exponential distribution with factor (1/µ), then multiplying the survival distributions of all cast members and finding the integral. Basically: E(Y)=∫e^(-θt) dt Where θ is the sum o...

Re: "Actuarial" Discussion

But then again I'm still an undergrad going through Exam M so I have an excuse. (And its fucking up my thinking process right now). Also, can someone tell me what program or Excel addon do you use for multivariate calculations? E[Kx] is one of the first things you learn :) I'm using a proprietary a...

Yes, I know. That's why 90% of my post was qualifying that number.

For an average male 72 year old, about 1/7, like the other person mentioned earlier in the thread.

Re: "Actuarial" Discussion

Well, my handy excel function says that a 72 year old male is is expected to live another 11.96 years, based on the Gam83 table. However, I wouldn't put much trust in this... underwriting at such advanced ages really requires taking into account variables other than age. It could be more than 12 yea...

Re: "Journal 3" discussion

@Rinso: You must be new here. "The volcano was looming ahead, and her tranquilizer pistol had only six darts left--barely enough to bring down even one tyrannosaur." Realism has never been a major theme of xkcd. Nah, I'm not new; I just never post. I'm perfectly ok with things being unrea...

Re: "Journal 3" discussion

Am I the only person that didn't enjoy this comic? I, never, ever, post here, but I was compelled to share. I'm not quite sure why I dislike the comic; but, perhaps it's due to how unbelievable it is. BHM is pretty damn cool, but suddenly coming into the possession of your own submarine is a bit sil...

Lambda_{something} = e^{whatever} (K_1) ?

Reminds me of the probability function for the poisson distribution... without the denominator.
