Re: 1907: "Immune System"

Fun things to bellow if your autoimmune disorder flares up: "No! NOOO! How can this be? I'm UNSTOPPABLE-" While holding out your hands and staring down at your own body, naturally. Oh, it's worse than that. Its only method of protecting you is to kill every living thing that it can't ident...

Re: Inktober

Some plenty nice stuff there. I tried to keep up with Inktober this year but lost steam due to illness + pet problems + start of school and other shit. I might try to catch up on it this weekend, though.

You can find some of the stuff I've done on my Instagram (http://instagram.com/forestfantasms ).

Re: [SAFESPACE] Woman Thread - All Things Women. Period.

Aw, is this thread dead? Where'd you all go? AFAIK the "period = NOT PREGNANT" thing is ... ngh, not really reliable, hell, my mom initially disbelieved she was pregnant because she'd had what passed for an abnormal period a short time before. Spoiler alert, obviously she WAS in fact pregn...

Evolutionary ecology: how to make 2nd year biology students cry by asking deceptively simple questions. Evolutionary ecology and sexual selection: The kinky sex lives of slugs. Basics of beekeeping: Bees are the Illuminati, and also we'll die if they disappear- oh look at that, they're disappearing ...

Re: Anybody in Germany?

Baden-Würrttembergerin here, and sadly we have yet to have a powdery, delicious pastry named in our honour. I am currently in Germany, not far from Stuttgart, so I believe the answer to OP's question is yes. I am someone, and I am here, OP. Rejoice!

Re: 1904: Research Risks

Many shark species are endangered or vulnerable to extinction now. Partially as a result of the same kind of unjustified fear that Jaws et al. instilled in the population. So using them for supervillain schemes on a meaningful scale is not really feasible atm. Alas, poor sharks. I agree with the pla...

Re: 1904: Research Risks

I feel like mycology should be way, way up higher on the ordinate, but that is mostly my ever-present awareness of how little we really know about fungi, oomycetes, slime molds etc. and my paranoia from playing one too many Fungus Plague scenarios in Plague Inc. Also, due to an unfortunate accident ...

Re: 1867: "Physics Confession"

Taking the argument to its conclusion, the desk is also a product of evolution. Genes chosen by natural selection built the person who built the desk. You're going to have to define sentience if you want trees on one side and desks on the other. It truly is a multi-faceted topic. I just found mysel...

Re: 1867: "Physics Confession"

Physics can be made a lot less scary if you replace all instances of "why" with "how." In general the "why" questions are much clearer if we replace "why" by "how come" or "what for", depending on the information required. Dictionaries exp...

Re: 1321: "Cold"

That the USA put a guy on the moon is impressive, that they managed to overtake the USSR and get there first despite having to convert between foot-pounds and horsepower-fortnights at every step in the calculations is just incredible. I reckon there'd be a McDonalds on Mars by now if NASA had used ...

Re: 1321: "Cold"

The argument is to climatology (and maths) as "if man came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" is to biology. Humans didn't come from monkeys . Humans are apes . I'm not sure it's good practice to correct someone's example of something that is wrong. I'm lost in the logic of wheth...

Re: 0999: "Cougars"

If you're lying in bed tonight and you see yellow eyes glinting in your window, are you being stalked by a puma, a mountain lion, a panther, a catamount, or a cougar? Trick question--in North America, they're all names for the same species, Puma concolor! Isn't learning fun? Anyway, sleep tight! Am...

You may be missing the point here... Sure, there may be falcon-equivalents in the Star Wars Galaxy that the ship is named for....but how likely is LUKE to know what one is? I mean, he comes from a freaking desert planet! I certainly don't know the names of all the weird species that are on my own f...

Re: 0852: "Local g"

Wow, you guys are a hard crowd. Using "buy" instead of "by" isn't (in this case) a grammar mistake, as in the writer not knowing what the right word to use is - we all know Randall is better than that. It's just a miswrite. They're homophones, it's very easy to use the wrong one ...
