Re: 2011: "Newton's Trajectories"
Anyway - it's been a while since an xkcd comic shook me as much, mainly because it tackles a thought I tend to have on a weekly basis. If there's one thing the remaining 21st century won't be, it's "boring". Anything else is in the cards.

Re: tire flip exercise
My Gym has a few tyres for that purpose (and also for bashing them with a sledgehammer which is also a cool workout). My advice would be to try different sizes to see which one has the right weight for you and then watch a few strongman tutorials on youtube on tyre flipping as there's a bit of techn...

It's funny - I always fondly think of Swabia as my ancestral home until I get to spend more than four days there.
That being said, most of my relatives are still down south and I like them.

As a former native American culture afficionado, I would like to point out that many tribes were confused by the European settlers' neverending hoarding. I guess what it came down to was that they, as a culture, were more relaxed about bad things happening, no matter how well you're prepared. Greed ...

I can't recommend China Mievielle's Bas-Lag novels "Perdido Street Station", "The Scar" and "Iron Council" enough. Inventive, subversive high fantasy with a touch of Lovecraft in it. Other books I recently read and liked: "Job" by Joseph Roth. To quote Wikiped...

The point isn't just to exercise, I'm aware this method is probably not the most efficient way. But I'm motivated and having fun. We're not machines. Therefore, "I'm motivated and having fun" is one of the most important things you could say about an exercise regimen. However, I suggest y...

Keep in mind that our body consists of 80% water. Therefore, water retention caused by carbs/salty foods/muscle soreness/hormones (menstrual cycle) can change your bodyweight by several pounds. Here's my advice to her: weigh yourself everyday to get many data points. Keep in mind that 1kg of actual ...

Re: Source of cravings
There are physical and mental reasons. I think angry squirrel summed them up pretty nicely; maybe we should add that your blood sugar also plays a big role. When you're used to eating sugary foods frequently, your body will adapt to this and you'll crave sweet food if you haven't had any in a while.

I guess the main issue is that so many people go from being sedentary to running 15+ miles a week within two or three months. Long distance ru...
