Re: Family and Friends: Dealing with conspiracy theorists

My father doesn't believe in climate change. I used to believe him, but I looked some stuff up online and started noticing holes in his theory. I finally realised he was wrong when one of his predictions (that the whole "hoax" was going to blow wide open in 2011) didn't come true. It was d...

Re: 1279: "Reverse Identity Theft"

I have [first name].[last name]@gmail.com as my main email address, but I've never received email for people with the same name as me. I feel like I'm missing out. My name isn't exactly uncommon, but I guess it's because it's not an English (as in the language, not "relating to England") n...

Re: Logical fallacies/douchebaggery in commercials.

There is that terrible, terrible commercial for Visa Paywave that always piss me off whenever it comes on It shows a cafeteria at lunchtime working like clockwork, everyone walking, eating and paying with Paywave in sync like some sort of a machine, before some guy decides to pay in cash and disrupt...

Re: What books would you like to see made into movies?

A Series of Unfortunate Events and A Separate Peace have both been adapted into films, but I don't think either achieved the full potential. I'd love to see a more faithful adaptation - but experience has taught me that this is very unlikely.

Re: My school fails at computer security...

While it's perhaps not as bad as some of the other examples, my school's not very good at this, either. They replaced the computers during the summer holidays, and some of the settings seems to have been changed - notably, prediction was turned on. This meant that anyone accessing Gmail could see th...

Proof that rational numbers are rare - by whom?

I've seen this proof credited to some mathematician in a book that I've read a while ago, but I can't for the life of me remember who he was. Can you help me? It's a proof that rational numbers occupy infinitesimally small space on the number line of all reals. It uses the countability of rationals ...

Re: 1101: "Sketchiness"

No love for "shady" as another synonym for "sketchy"? "shady" was the word that I came up with as soon as I read ShuRugal's post explaining what "sketchy" means to Americans/USAns/Yanks/whatever you'd call the citizens or residents of the United States of Ame...

Re: Books you never finished

I've attempted War and Peace and The Silmarillion three times each and still haven't finished either, but each time I get a little further than the last time, so maybe someday I will. I also tried to read Twilight to see what all the (positive and negative) attention was all about... It was mind-num...
