Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

I always interpreted "on the nets" to mean usenet, or some equivalent discussion forum.

Re: "Fiction Rule of Thumb" Discussion

At a glance(having not read his books) 'ramen', 'framling', 'varelse' and 'utlanning' are all swedish words meaning 'the frame', 'stranger'(the noun), 'creature' and 'foreigner' respectively but without knowing in which context they are used I can't conclusively say that they aren't "made up&q...

Re: "Kilobyte" Discussion

My favorite of these is the Kb, because it's so true. My iPod currently holds 1.75gb of music on its 2gig drive, and yet it still tells me it's full. Alas. Sigh. /dramatics. That one is actually Apple's doing, the iPod OS is stored on the internal drive. iTunes adjusts the maximum size to account f...

I haven't lingered in /b/ long enough to know it's benefits, but ircimages at least has LOTS of porn and frequent LOLCats. I go there for the funny.

I meant that 4chan is based on the whole shock-photo culture of things like goatse and tubgirl. I could point out that the shock photo stuff is really only on 4chan's /b/ board, but that's basically all 4chan is used for, so it's a moot point :P Not true, the animated gif board gets it too. Lots of...

Wow, why are all Randall's comics these days copies of his older ones ? Yeah, you got me, but you also just lost twenty dollars and my self respect. YOU BASTARD! One year running, an entire year, and you made me lose. Goatse was the first for me, after that not much effected me. Tubgirl made me cri...

My alarm clock isnt bright enough for me to see it unless I want to. However, the clock on the cable box on the opposite side of the room is so glaringly bright it might as well be a night-light.

I should tape over that thing.

Mmm, Jewel Staite. I was quite elated when I found out she's joining the cast of Atlantis! Is it a permanent role now (i.e. she's actually in the next season too)? From what I last saw, she wanted to go home. That'd be awesome though, Jewel is awesome. Yes, she is permanently on the show for this s...

Papyrus is the unofficial font for all things Firefly. It's what the Browncoats Society (Firefly fan club) chose to use for all their promotional material.

I always took xkcd to be a comic about nerdy topics. Be it math, programming, enders game, philosophy, or star wars, every release has some reference that a nerd will get. There has yet to be an xkcd that I didn't find funny. Remember that Star Wars is as much a part of geek culture as it is pop-cul...

Oh please. It's possible to read an author without ascribing to their views. I have read at least 20 Card novels, and several short stories, and while I notice when his Mormonism is peering through the writing (which does happen quite frequently once you know to look for it, but only rarely in a bl...

That said, I read Ender's Game having been told (can someone verify?) that Ender's Game was the setup for Speaker and the rest. So it makes sense that the book is quite different from the rest of the series/parallel series/8+book conglomeration. That's correct, Card said that in the afterward of Sp...

Oh, yeah, and the grand plot over the whole series of moving a rogue planet from orbit around that solar system in order to eliminate the threat from a space born organism. That's pretty hard sci-fi right there.

I'd put any of Anne McCaffrey's books about dragons firlmy in the "Fantasy" camp because, hey!! Book about dragons!! Does it use sci-fi tropes to create interest in the actual dragons? Maybe. Is the book about how the characters use sci-fi "things" to go on an adventure to learn...

[ Dragon's Dawn completely blew away everything else in its series though, and that was basically the only truly Sci-Fi in it. Renegades of Pern and All the Wyers of Pern were also very Sci-Fi. I have a hard time calling the rest of the series Fantasy tho, given the lack of magic and mysticism. If ...

Oh, BTW, despite his feelings on homosexuality, Card is a democrat. He recently wrote about this in a column, and how it made his life difficult when he lived in Utah.
He voted for Bush both times because he felt Bush was the lesser of two evils. No doubt, the reason so many others did as well.

Someone in here mentioned Empire as being a right-wing propaganda book, and I just can't leave that standing. Clearly you didn't read Card's afterward. The book was commissioned by a game company who gave him an already made outline for how the story should flow, and told him to fill in the details....
