Re: Recommend a book

The Book of Sand and Shakespeare's Memory by Jorge Luis Borges It's a thin book containing 13 short stories, but you will spend hours rereading them. I've read The Mirror and the Mask over 20 times and still sometimes get shivers reading it. His stories reveal something special, something I haven't...

Re: The Most Beautiful Piece of Music

I just came across Minnie Riperton. She is incredible and I want to steal her except she's dead which makes me cry bitterly. Up there with the best songs, I reckon. 1:56 is pure awesomeness. My idea of a beautiful song would sound the opposite of epic. Something beautiful in its simplicity. Like th...

Re: Tool

I keep hearing that Tool puts on an awesome performance or something... so at this point, I am left with the assumption that every last one of them had the deadly Motaba virus when I saw them, as most rocks give off a better sense of life and mobility than they did onstage. Don't actually own any o...

Re: Where has rock gone?

Just look at it today: We've got horrendously shallow over-hyped pop divas and crappy it-all-sounds-the-same pop music. "country" is just pop music with a fake southern accent. And...that's it. It's not even that rock isn't popular anymore: If that were so than Guitar Hero/Rock Band would...

Eddie Vedder is another name that should be added here.

Re: Powerful Vocals?

I'm surprised nobody mention Maynard James Keenan yet. Layne Staley is another powerful vocalist. Ian Kenny is another fun vocalist to listen to. There are plenty more, but these are the few vocalists that come to mind at the moment.

Re: Best song lyrics.

The lyrics for this song never get old. The song is called "Gotta Knock a Little Harder" and this is just the beginning of the song. I believe what makes these lyrics so great, is that they start out with such bleak imagery, and crescendo into a lively melody that really makes you feel ali...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hi there. I have been longtime reader of xkcd comics, but just recently came across the xkcd forums. I'm a 20 year old college student at Baruch in New York, NY. Although I am earning a CIS degree, I already hold a PHD in procrastination. Of all the life's simple pleasures, I love listening to music...

How do you write?

This is just a thought that came into my head while I was preparing to write an essay. How does each of you prepare and write an essay? Do you create a very structured essay with clearly connected topics which is specific and do you create guidelines to stay your course? Or do you brainstorm as you ...

Re: POST HERE FIRST - INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hello everyone at xkcd. It's funny how all the interesting things I've stumbled upon or learned of by accident have changed me and inspired me. To me, xkcd is one of those things :). Both the comics and the forums are great. My name is George and I live in the Brooklyn borough of New York city. I or...
