The example I heard relating to this was of a very rare disease that affected 1 in a million people, and a test for that disease that's 99% accurate. If you get diagnosed with the disease, what are the odds you have it? Somewhere in the region of 1 in ten thousand, as you're most likely in the misd...

My favourite argument for the 0.99 = 1 thing is using Order Theory. The set of real numbers is a dense ordering, therefore 0.99 recurring is equal to 1.
