Re: Tipping, Gratuity, Charity, what's fair or not fair?

I know. I am suggesting that the system is not flawed, because the prospect of a good tip encourages good service, and based on the service I have recieved in the US versus, say, the UK, I think it works. You could argue that the system is flawed, because servers don't get a lot of money, but I'd p...

Re: Tipping, Gratuity, Charity, what's fair or not fair?

Yep. The american system is dumb as hell, but most of the methods of *doing* something about it just hurt the servers instead. Your system is flawed; you should convince people to change it, instead of forcing them to tip you. I disagree. In all the countries I've ever visited, the service in Ameri...

Re: Confessional Thread

My flatmate sometimes walks in on me in the shower, she gets soooo mad. Thing is, our bathroom has no natural ventilation and so the bathroom gets all steamy and so when I'm home alone I leave the door open to prevent said, but sometimes she comes home from work early. I don't really mind, we're bo...

Re: Confessional Thread

Confession: I walked into the shower in my dorm this morning. Literally. Like, owww, I have a bruise on my face from walking into the shower. I take 1-2 showers a day too, sometimes just because I'm bored and I like being clean. I really like to be all clean before I go to classes and stuff, but the...

The first rule of PMS didn't seem that good to me. This one is much better. And I find calling your uterus a cunt highly amusing, for a number of linguistic reasons. Fun fact: I can only really use swear words when I am quoting somebody. I agree, I try to incorporate swear words into my vocabulary ...

Re: Tipping, Gratuity, Charity, what's fair or not fair?

Actually, there's a question...what is the min wage in the US? Or, well, I suppose that's a ridiculous question, I imagine it varies from state to state. Here it's €8.65 ($12.50 / £6) an hour, and it's actually illegal now to be paid below that, except in certain circumstance...I think under 18s ca...

Re: Tipping, Gratuity, Charity, what's fair or not fair?

In any case, I think tips are *never* required, unless you have significant amounts of spare money, but always appreciated. In the US it is definitely required, at least at restaurants and stuff. That is why they don't pay servers minimum wage, because they are dependent on tips, not wages. How can...

Re: Tipping, Gratuity, Charity, what's fair or not fair?

The thing is, for many situations where tipping is expected, that is their income. It is NOT a bonus for a good job, it is 80-90% of their pay. My mom supports my sister and I by waitressing. She makes $2.30 and hour, $140-ish dollars per week is nowhere near enough to support a family of three as w...
