Why do cold sores heal so perfectly?

Now, I occasionally get cold sores (i.e. herpes simplex virus on the face). At times these things seem to completely destroy the skin - big, nasty sores with scabs and so on. I've had one or two that looked as bad as a severe local burn. What I've been wondering is this: a similar level of skin dama...

Re: Snake gives 'virgin birth' to extraordinary babies

I always thought that a YY human (and hence these WW snakes) would be impossible because there would be essential information in the X chromosome. Considering that every human (afawk) in our evolutionary history had an X chromosome, surely there would be many pieces of genetic information that are n...

Re: Math Fetish: Neurologically Impossible? Implausible?

I've experienced rushes of pleasure while thinking about pure maths. I've never tried, but I'm pretty sure that I could jack off successfully while appreciating mathematical aesthetics, without resorting to the more usual thoughts of women. I'm going to try and report back. There's no way I could ge...

Re: 1 W laser pointer hits the market.

I'm pretty sure you can see the whole beam with lasers this powerful (at least, according to the guide on their site you can), so tracing its source is trivial. Hey I think you're right. I remember someone having a green one a few years ago of which you could see the path, although that was at nigh...

Re: 1 W laser pointer hits the market.

Have you ever been sitting on a bus or whatever, and had someone repeatedly 'poke' you with a laser pointer? It's really annoying for sure, and the worst thing is you have no idea who's doing it, especially if they're subtle about it and you're in a crowded area. Now say a malicious or just ignorant...

Re: Bibles for Porn on college campus

22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. And there are plenty of others....

The standard implication is, of course, that "she" refers to the previous speaker's mother.

Re: Atheism and Its Effect on One's Life

Yes, it is, if I understand that article right. Even assuming that the MWI holds, and that at least one possible universe is capable of supporting life indefinitely, the problem with using quantum immortality for decision-making is described in the linked page. In short, you are almost certainly in...

Re: Need help proving a trigometric identity

If you'd like another hint: Once you've simplified the obvious identities and taken everything in terms of sines and cosines, try multiplying your fraction by the same thing on the top and the bottom (ie one) such that it simplifies something. With the right steps, you can finish it in j...

Re: Overpopulation

Excellent post, you make interesting points! To the above poster, Take the given example of the deer on the island - when populations approach their limits, there is the possibility that they will cause permanent damage to the environment that supports them. They feed off that which provides the cap...

Re: Incubators of Genius

IQ is more or less understood to be normally distributed, so that finding persons of a high enough IQ is just a matter of having a large enough population and a little good luck. IQ is normally distributed by definition! A high population may not be enough to effect human intelligence of proportion...
