Not necessarily, contrary to popular belief cable is plenty fast enough for gaming.

heres my latest speed test on comcast teir 1 cable connection which is on par with entry level fios.

Verizon has FiOS which is a FTTH (Fiber To The Home) service. currently its the cheapest, but is limited availability. I think they are on par with the faster cable internet connections price wise.
