It almost certainly does not. Though I'm pretty sure it uses the fact that the integers are integrally closed, which immediately implies nth roots of 2 are irrational.

Re: "Pandora" Discussion

I don't understand this one. I think I'm having problems with the labels. To me this looks like there are two sets, one is labeled "What Pandora plays" and the other isn't labeled. The intersection of the two sets is labeled "What Pandora plays if anyone is around". Then it looks...

Re: ε / δ limits question

delta = min { 1, epsilon/5 } works just fine

given eps. > 0 choose delta = min {1, epsilon/5}
|x - 2| < delta =>|f(x) - 4| = |x^2 - 4|
= |(x-2)(x+2)|
=|x-2| |x+2|
<= 1 * |x+2|
< epsilon/5

Re: How to state continuity for some odd functions

Are you taking the same math class as I am?

Edit, oh and f(x) = [x] is continuous on all intervals (a, b) where a, b are integers and a + 1 = b

Re: "Fiction Rule of Thumb" Discussion

Interesting that Anathem is singled out. For anyone who's read/is reading it, it obviously has a lot of made-up words, but that's kind of normal for Neal Stephenson (aside from Baroque Cycle/Cryptonomicon). And if you've read, say Diamond Age , you'll realize that the fact that even some of the term...

My question is: who's the guy on the computer? And what kind of computer is that?

Is he God and is he using God's computer? That's pretty chill.

Re: "A Better Idea" discussion

This is interesting because my senior prom is happening in less than three weeks and I have to make exactly this decision. Well, not exactly . It wouldn't be a formal LAN. It's neat because I have friends who are holding a LAN but I also have like 8 different girls I could take to the prom. It's all...

Re: POST HERE FIRST - INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hi.
Uh.
My name is Jay. I'm 17. I'm a senior in high school in New Hampshire (college applications +++)
I'm kind of a long-time lurker of these boards. I'm posting in this thread so I don't get the lame "ZOMG INTRO THREAD" people yelling at me if I ever want to post anything.
