Hands On support for a coding newbie? OSX Specific

I'm interested in coding as a hobby. I've had a couple of false starts, most recently getting through most of How To Think Like A Computer Programmer, a Python book, so I know the basics of manipulating information within a program - strings, kinds of loops, etc. I always feel just at the cusp of re...

Re: Opinions - Linux vs. OS X?

Thanks for the advice, all. I've got some things to start tinkering with :)

Re: Opinions - Linux vs. OS X?

So... you guys are telling me I can run like GNOME or Xfce directly on OS X? I never considered that at all. Would I be subject to the same restrictions on apps as I am now with Fink, struggling to get Amarok to compile and without an Mac Intel-compatible version of Xine? I'll do some research tonig...

Re: Opinions - Linux vs. OS X?

I guess I like about 90% of OS X, and I'm wondering if Linux can take me the rest of the way, with effort. I enjoyed fooling around with it three years ago, but three years is a long time and I may not have picked the best distro anyway. Also, I'm kind of looking for someone to convince me to spend ...

Opinions - Linux vs. OS X?

I bought a MacBook last year, after years of Windows XP use, and am pretty well versed on the differences, both in philosophy and practicality, between the two systems. I've dabbled in Linux, spending a couple months with SimplyMEPIS maybe three years ago, and while I got it going pretty well on a d...

Re: Journal Discussion

That's just a little not fair at all.

Re: "Fandom" Discussion

I'm being a bit lazy by not reading the thread up to this point, but quick question: Is the Ronpaul a meme? I see his name mentioned in odd places here and there, and part of me sees it as some sort of joke - based on form, not bias, since I know very little about his platform - but the rest of me ...

Re: "Classic" Discussion

Cool to hear some other people into modern underground music - not that I'm surprised XKCD attracts some openminded musicians ;) There's a lot of people who are saying categorically 'I don't like this genre' or 'I don't like this decade,' and so forth, and it makes me a little sad, to think what the...

Re: "Classic" Discussion

... I don't get this. It weirds the hell out of me. There are more cellphones and cameras in the air at concerts than lighters. Though I suppose it's to be expected, since most of this generation seems to disapprove of smoking... But honestly, CELLPHONES??? How did the cellphone manage to replace t...

Re: "Classic" Discussion

the most severe problems with the music industry trace back to the Telecommunications Act of '96, and the amazing consolidation of radio that followed. The good news is that the current business model can't last. Radiohead releasing their latest album the way they did pretty much sealed it - the old...
