Re: What-If 0138: Jupiter Submarine

Let's talk about reverse osmosis. If you set up an osmotic membrane with sea water on one side and fresh water on the other, if enough pressure is applied on the sea-water side, fresh water will be pushed through from the sea water side. You could do this in a static setup, with an air-filled vertic...

Re: What-If 0138: Jupiter Submarine

Ideal gas?

Air doesn't follow the ideal gas law; it's noticeably non-ideal. At least, when we're getting into high-pressure regimes, which is what's being discussed here.

Re: What-If 0098: "Blood Alcohol"

Apparently (in some varieties of vampire, at least) the iron is lost through the skin via flakes of Iron disulfide , though that raises the question of where the sulfur comes from... Consumption of hydrogen sulfide via sulfuric acid? Possibly developed as a natural defense to survive in the dayligh...

Re: What-If 0098: "Blood Alcohol"

If one person has candidiasis and the yeast is generating alcohol in their blood, and another person drinks that person's blood and (through a scratch) becomes infected in turn, the second person could become drunk.

Re: 1368: "One Of The"

Actually, gendered pronouns are not chosen on the basis of a person's sex, but on the basis of their gender. Sex refers to what chromosomes\genitals\gonads a person was born with; gender refers to wether someone is a man or a woman (or neither). Sex and gender don't always align: not all men have p...

Re: 1368: "One Of The"

For many people, the most recognizable arches in St. Louis are the golden ones. :-(

One of my pet peeves is people unnecessarily hedging with the indeterminate-gender pronoun "they" to refer to a specific individual of known sex.

Re: What-If 0071: "Stirring Tea"

(Note: Pushing almost-boiling water to boiling takes a large burst of extra energy on top of what's required to heat it to the boiling point—this is called the enthalpy of vaporization.) I don't think this is right. As I understand it, the enthalpy of vaporization is the heat that would be required...

I was surprised by the stuff about liquid nitrogen reacting with organics or exploding — WTF, Dartmouth? But if you follow the link, the document states clearly that the problem is a result of liquid N2 condensing oxygen from air to create a solution of liquid O2, which is highly reactive.

Re: What-If 0040: "Pressure Cooker"

If you're going to be pumping fluorine into your pressure cooker (or other container), which you definitely shouldn't try, remember that the container has to be specially lined so the fluorine won't react with it. Teflon is good; otherwise, a nickel alloy — you get a thin layer of nickel fluoride wh...

At the bottom, the combination of heat and pressure drive off volatiles, leaving coal. I did a quick calculation using the density of water (I think oobleck is denser) and found that pressure at a depth would be about 47 gigpascals which I believe is more than enough to produce diamond. Oobleck is ...

more oobleck. MUCH more. I want to observe the effects of a planet with a 3000 mile deep layer of oobleck. At the bottom, the combination of heat and pressure drive off volatiles, leaving coal. At the top, fermentation produces vast amounts of ethanol and CO 2 . We get a runaway greenhouse effect t...

A bathtub full of oobleck is a lot of fun. It was one of the unofficial attractions sponsored by a convention committee in charge of random weird stuff at a couple of Minicons. You can jog on the spot on it, but if you stand still, you start to sink, much as one would in quicksand. If you can hold o...
