"NO FATE BUT THE NARRATIVES WE IMPOSE ON LIFE'S RANDOM CHAOS TO DISTRACT OURSELVES FROM OUR EXISTENTIAL PLIGHT"

Well, we don't know that.

Re: 1152: "Communion"

In case anyone's wondering what this communion thing is about, and how it relates to "eating flesh and blood": 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, “Take this and eat it. This is my body.” 27 Then he took the cup....

Re: Spacky Woonerisms

In boring car rides, I used to spoonerize the names of restaurants and signs and stuff. So of course you'd get... Him Tortons, Kurger Bing, W&A, DcMonald's (try pronouncing it  ) and my personal favorite... Chentucky Kied Fricken. One day, on a particularly long ride, I got some younger...

Here we go! The "Top Six Incestuous Relationships in the BIBLE!" http://listverse.com/2008/05/26/top-6-incestuous-relationships-in-the-bible/ Soooo...... According to many Christians, morality is DEFINED by the Bible. If, in the Bible, God hisself recommends incestuous relationships, then...

Re: 0977: "Map Projections"

The most truly accurate flat representation of the earth's surface would be an Equirectangular Projection which fades into transparency the further you get from the equator; the atoms of the surface getting more and more spread out as you approach the poles.

Re: 0969: "Delta-P"

I agree with the people saying you can't establish some sort of time-flow-rate difference between Earth and Narnia. It seems to me that it is only when people are observing/passing through the portal that the time is synchronized in any way at all, and that when people are not observing/passing thro...

I wish Bussard ramjets were a plausible form of interstellar transportation.

Re: Secrets

If, in this hypothetical situation, thought sharing is a reality...that could change everything drastically. Suppose the beliefs of religion X are actually correct. If thought sharing were a fact of reality, there's a chance that everyone would suddenly be faced with the choice to convert to that re...

Re: Secrets

I think it's also a bit of a moot point. Die gedanken sind frei - people can always keep secrets in their thoughts. I imagine we would instinctively keep secrets from anyone we don't trust absolutely.

Re: Mandatory Organ Donation

If that is the case, that simply means that premise 2) is the one that is false. Meritocracy does in fact reward people based on privilege and wealth, as well as based on ability and talent, because ability and talent can be derived from/cultivated by privilege/wealth. Come on, this one's easy. Bas...

Re: No Country for Gentleman Scientists

I'm going to give my own off-the-top-of-my-head definition in order to bypass all the debate (while perhaps risking irrelevance) and give an opinion. If, by gentleman scientist, I mean: -Not necessarily finicially independent (meaning, may need to work for money) -May accept scientific funding from ...

Even if it somehow managed to stay aloft, any amount of ambient light would do the thing in. The time dilation would blueshift it all into gamma rays.

Re: What to make of a creation statement from a Christian sc

Yeah, I guess you're right. That's the key strategy of religion: Express your claims in the language of pseudo-factuality, but interpret them as vaguely as possible, so no one can ever refute them. ... Technically, the Judeo-Christian God doesn't "seem" to value anything, considering ther...

Re: What to make of a creation statement from a Christian sc

Is there an even remotely sane reason why an omnipotent benevolent being would choose, of all possible things, "design by agonizing gigadeath" as his practical creation tool? That probably depends on your definition of "benevolent"; lots of different assumptions tend to be packe...

Re: What to make of a creation statement from a Christian sc

Hi, another lurker posting for the first time, to try to answer this (really good) question. The 'merely' here could probably be replaced by 'only', to get a better sense of the meaning: "We deny that creation came about only through a naturalistic process of evolution (evolution understood as ...
