Your idea to do an experiment with pennies seems off the mark, as they have a comparatively large weight and low surface area. Also, your inclined plane would have to be long enough for the pennies to reach terminal velocity to observe the effect. I've observed it when biking down a hill with friend...

I believe it has to do with terminal velocity. Because the zipline is slanted, only a portion of the gravitational force actually acts to push the object down. Meridian Handbook of Classical Mythology is generally extremely accurate, especially on the more obscure myths and characters (its more of an encyclopedia)

Morford and Lenardon's is a very good collection.
