Re: I think that my teacher is wrong...

There are many, many people that would say that writing "1960's" is completely wrong and you should be beheaded for using that apostrophe. Your teacher is wrong about it being possessive ("from" is the hint, that's a preposition), the "s" is there because the word is in...

Re: Stories that can be read in more than one order.

If you're interested in this kind of literary experimentation, I highly recommend looking up some stuff from the French Oulipo group of writers. They had tons of crazy stuff like that. What you are describing sounds a little bit like Raymond Queneau's Hundred Thousand Billion Poems , where he wrote ...

Re: Source code for Java's Arrays.sort?

Interesting... At least my previous point still stands, in that you can't get much faster than quicksort, and the fastest alternative is a natively coded quicksort. Hehe... You can, actually. Since the functions that use quicksort all sort primitive types (integers and such), you could imple...

Your pedantry is annoying, but your correctness is irrefubbible.

BTW, in this scenario, I'm totally the girl. Pleading with my (statistically) significant other that I am, in fact, her boyfriend. It's not pathetic... not at all...

Re: "Security Holes" discussion

I mean, EVERY single generated key on debian based systems since September 2006 needs to be replaced (and sent to CAs for re-authentication). It's a catastrophe. Even worse if if you're in my situation and actually run a moderately-sized CA with the root key generated on a flawed debian system - I'...

Re: "Security Holes" discussion

I haven't regenerated my keys yet, so I'm seriously paranoid that someone is haxxoring any one of my Ubuntu boxes as we speak . I'm getting to it tonight. Seriously though, this is a fuck-up of massive proportions. Seeding random data based ONLY on the PID???? Heads should roll over this, this ...

Re: "Responsible Behavior" Discussion

I wrote a really long response to the other guy, and I fear I will do it again. Apologies to all that are not that interested :) BTW, my previous answer might have sounded needlessly harsh, I just wanted to strongly discourage the notion. My passions get the better of me some times, I apologize :) H...

Re: "Responsible Behavior" Discussion

While use of rand() itself might be inadvisable, most modern operating systems implement PRNGs that appear to be mostly secure. While there are certainly attack methods, they generally seem involve control of all entropy sources. If you believe these to be insecure, then surely you cannot recommend...

Re: "Responsible Behavior" Discussion

I'm inclined to generate 700 MB of one time pad data, burn it to a CD to share with my friends, and encrypt all my communications with them. I'm just too lazy to actually implement that plan. NO! BAD CRYPTOGRAPHY!! Two issues here: 1) If you mean "generate 700 MB of one time pad data" as ...

Re: "Responsible Behavior" Discussion

Basically, it's like this: in order to receive encrypted mail from people, you need to have a public key. This will let people encrypt emails to you that only you can read. However, there is the problem of authentication, how do you know for certain that key X belongs to person Y, someone could just...

Re: "Reset" Discussion

I'm a bit confused. Reset as in set back to zero? I think a more clever sign would be "It has been 38 days since someone changed the amount of days on this sign." Because then it would just be mind blowing. Not really, it would just stay at 0 all the time. No it wouldn't. Think about it. ...
