Re: Solar system "what if?"

Is the second sun the same size as the regular sun? Yeah, it is. If conditions could be stabilized, then it would end up looking a lot like the double planet in this thread . The transition itself would likely cause the extinction of all life. But if it didn't, there would still be some significant...

Re: Solar system "what if?"

The problem is, then you're leaving the original moon in an unstable position next to the double planet. I think if you did that, a collision would be inevitable.

Solar system "what if?"

Suppose you started with two solar systems, one is ours, and another is one that functions very differently. That solar system is composed of only the earth, sun, and moon. The sun and moon of the new solar system orbit the earth under the constant control of an intelligent entity who can make them ...

That's too bad, because the animation quality has increased steadily and noticeably across all three seasons and actually puts down a lot of the complaints that you can't do good animation with Flash.

Planetary exploration to be completely axed.

http://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/oct/26/obama-readies-to-blast-nasa/ Word has leaked out that in its new budget, the Obama administration intends to terminate NASA’s planetary exploration program. The Mars Science Lab Curiosity, being readied on the pad, will be launched, as will the nearly co...

Re: 0964: "Dorm Poster"

Okay, I'm going to bite. What exactly is stick-Randall's "fix" in the poster? 1) the "lens" that converges the light back in the second poster, or; 2) the whole second poster? If it's 1), then it's basically a lame "haha I win Physics" joke, since the Dark Side of the ...

Re: 0954: "Chin-Up Bar"

Actually, now that I think about it, the warning on the front page is very applicable to this situation. Warning: this comic occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuit...

You know...life in prison isn't sounding so bad if it gives me a chance to piss off the people who think anybody's stupid enough to actually....

Wait a minute.

Re: 0954: "Chin-Up Bar"

The first thing I thought when I read the comic was that it was so obviously dangerous...I hope nobody actually tries this. Perhaps the obvious is obvious to other people as well? Perhaps the obvious is so obviously obvious that nobody would actually try the obviously dangerous trick in real life b...

Re: 0954: "Chin-Up Bar"

Huh. A bunch of overly literal people who can't understand a simple joke.

I gues it's true. XKCD's audience is primarily autistic children.

Re: 0938: "T-Cells"

Just stepping in to say to the people who believe this comic spreads ignorance and fear about a legitimate medical technique; your attitude is incredibly insulting and egocentric. Us "mindless masses" who read xkcd for the funny jokes even though we don't fully get all of them aren't quite...
