Re: 1288: "Substitutions"

Someone make this into a Chrome app! I forked butt-to-butt a while back to fix a couple things, and seeing this realized it could be retooled to do this properly...it's a work in progress, but it does the job as-is: https://github.com/cincodenada/butt-to-butt ( Direct .crx download ) - just downloa...

Re: 1190: "Time"

Welp I'm off to bed, as the last of the Lower 48 approaches 1am. As for predictions: I really want this to integrate into 1110. There are a few candidates, none of them great - most of them the slopes are too, well slopey - I've been comparing - but my favorite is Sand-Liberty Island at a higher tid...

Re: 1190: "Time"

I have exactly 0 time to read the above posts so I'm sorry if I'm repeating any.. What's this: time07.min.js? At first glance it looks like the obfuscated javascript code looks like it updates the image every X (30?) minutes to the next png image uploaded on the server. Is this what it does? Also I...

Re: 1190: "Time"

So I've skimmed all 20 pages thus far and know the basics of the Javascript have been explained, and ternarybit's pastebin is a little annotated , but I haven't seen any breakdowns that fully explain what the script is doing. I posted a gist with the code de-minified and de-obfuscated with functions...

Re: 1126: "Epsilon and Zeta"

As others have mentioned, Randall has parodied these reports before . And yes, strawbearlyjamm: Am I missing something, or are the excerpts from the blag post not real quotations, just 'jokes'? The blogpost is parodies, not actual quotes. The comic, however, is composed entirely of real quotes (besi...

Re: 0880: "Headache"

How can o‌ne t‌est ones 3D creation? I saved the HTML file for the comic I tried to 3Dify, but I find no reference to comic.json that I could redirect to my local hard drive. In case you didn't see it: I made a slightly altered page to test mine, see my post above. The JSON is right in the HTML, so...

Re: 0880: "Headache"

I see someone already found my re-do of http://www.xkcd.com/31 . For those still hunting, I re-did the rest of the barrel series ( 1 , 11 , 22 , 25 ) earlier today, and am working on a couple others on and off today. For those who want to make some and test them, I put together a modified test page ...

Re: "Dimensional Analysis" discussion

I looked through all four pages, and a couple people have sort of said this (qrs_iii got all the numbers, but didn't explain). I'm not sure what numbers Randall actually used, but if you go with: Planck Energy = 1.956 × 109 J Core pressure = 360 GPa (upper limit from Wikipedia) Combined EPA Gas Mile...

Effects on the original?

Firstly, the title on this topic is backwards. Way to be. Secondly, I can't believe no one has noted the effect this comic has on the original - if you go back and reread the original , it changes it from a comic of painful, uncomfortable, melancholy truth, to one where Mike is a jerk with a grudge....

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Pluto never should have been a planet; when it was first discovered, it was thought to be larger than we now know it to be, and the Kuiper Belt was entirely unknown. But now that we have more correct information, there's no logical justification for keeping Pluto...

I was bored today, so I went through with Inkscape and traced the originals to make vectors out of them, which should be more friendly. I've attached a zip containing the SVG with all three vector drawings, and large PNGs of each character. The top-down raptor was the hardest, and therefore looks th...
