Re: What-If 0043: "Train Loop"

A roller coaster train weights a few tons spread out across maybe 40 feet and 16 axles, this train would have 8 cars and be fairly flexible. The El 17 weighs 64 tons, is 53 feet long and isn't flexible at all. The length of the train or the car is going to factor into how tight of a loop you can han...

Re: 1112: "Think Logically"

The problem with chess, IMO, is that it's such a well-chartered territory by now. If you want to play chess really, really well, there is not much room for creativity anymore; it's more like a science with established findings. At least that's my impression as an average player when I study all tho...

Re: What-If 0001: Relativistic Baseball

A careful reading of official Major League Baseball Rule 6.08(b) suggests that in this situation, the batter would be considered "hit by pitch", and would be eligible to advance to first base. Frankly, that pitcher's facing a hell of a fine. After all, he's just thrown at the batter ... t...

Re: 1078: "Knights"

In the US my high school offered a semester long class on Shakespeare, in that time we covered Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello, Twelfth Night, Taming of the Shrew, Midsummer Night's Dream and Henry IV parts 1 and 2. Our British Literature class had MacBeth and I feel like somewhere in high school ...

Re: 1071: "Exoplanets"

This comic is now receiving (dubious) and (citation needed) tags, regarding the number 786. Ok, looking through the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopedia http://exoplanet.eu/catalog.php their current number is 778. So, at the time of posting, he's over-estimating... 778 exoplanets + 8 planets in our own ...

Re: 1071: "Exoplanets"

Makes you wonder if he even sized all those circles in correspondence to actual found exoplanets, or just an approximation of the percentage of sizes. My hypothesis of this comic's creation: Let's say he went with 10% small, 30% medium, 60% large circles ... vary the buggers up a bit for each group...

Thank you for explaining the joke in the alt text, Randall. I would never get it otherwise. (NOTE: This is completely sarcastic) Thank you for explaining the sarcasm in the parantheses, SirMustapha. Re: 1032: "Networking"

Well there's also the issue of presenting subjective criticism as if it were objective fact. Saying "This isn't funny," or, "This joke fails," isn't acurate criticism because what is really being expressed is, "I don't think this is funny," or "This joke fails, fo...

"There are three 2s in the English language." ...Huh? Say it aloud. I purposely didn't spell out any of the three spellings, to, too, or two, because that makes it even harder to read. There's nothing mysterious about, its difficult to count homophones in written word but pretty easy in s...

Re: 0973: "MTV Generation"

And I wasn't commenting on "sexism", but on Randall's rampant White Knight syndrome. Yeah these comics would be a lot better if week after week, day after day, Randall just criticized the same person in what is essentially the same way every time. I think the use of different words to say...

It's your kids, Marty! Being named Marty caused this post to baffle me for a couple of minutes. "I don't have kids," and, "Who is this person?" were common thoughts. I feel like someone should point out that as far as jokes go this one doesn't work when spoken, or alternatively ...

Re: Favourite faster than light technology

My favorite is from a series of novels the first of which is titled The Depths of Time . In this series FTL is achieved through wormholes that travel through time. So for example stars A and B are 40 light years apart. At some point between the 2 stars, say the middle there's a wormhole that allows ...
