Re: 1190: "Things that are on my side for 600, Alex!"

I seem to have gotten some wordy-writey-meaning-conveying-wibbly-wobbly gunk stuck in my head the wrong way, and I'm not sure if I can communicate with your religion any longer. I'll just sit here banging on my head until things clear up.

Re: 1190: "Time"

I know that when I first weighed in on this thread, I think about 50 newpix ago, I implored you all to stay sane.

But I take that back now that the actual nature of the insanity has revealed itself. Please continue.

Re: 1190: "Time"

Why would the left seem to change so much more than the right, though? I noticed the ground to the left getting higher, but the shore barely moves. From zooming out at the same time as panning to the left. If you picture it just zooming out, both sides would appear to be moving towards the center. ...

Re: 1190: "Time"

I wonder if at some point one of the people scraping the comic is going to have to set up an email alert service that sends out a message if this comic ever changes.

Re: 1190: "Time"

More efficient would be to get up for 5-10 minutes every hour - check in at about five to and go back to bed as soon as the new image appears - depending on how quickly you wake up and how close you want to cut it, you could get it down to, say, ten seconds to the hour until the new frame arrives.....

Re: 1190: "Time"

As someone who has followed this comic from the beginning and read every single post in this thread (really), the funniest thing to me is the people who show up late, don't read anything that came before (understandable at this point), and somehow think they are the first person to make observation...

Re: "The Sea" Discussion

The .alt-text is there to ensure that everyone gets the "true" meaning of the primary punchline. The funny thing is, it sounds like those of us who got the primary joke right away were then totally confused by the alt text. I was trying to figure out some drain the lizard/drain the sea co...

Re: "Geohashing" discussion

My Saturday is looking too busy to make a meetup, but it looks like a reasonable location based on my home address: a little north of Harper's Ferry, not far from the river, in what looks like somebody's farmland (but close enough to the road that a roadside meetup would work.) Checking out the othe...

Re: "Geohashing" discussion

Using the DOW opening has several advantages that other suggestions don't, namely that it isn't predictable ahead of time, and that it's easily found historic information. Something like the load on xkcd's server isn't public information (and if it is provided, it isn't likely to still be available ...

Re: "Cheap GPS" Discussion

So when it alternates between STRAIGHT and LEFT, you know its 'somewhere' along the diagonal... it could be worse, it could be INFRONT or BEHIND I guess. How general can you get before it becomes impossible to pick a direction? Consider hooking it up to your car speakers, and every time you shout &...

Re: "Cheap GPS" Discussion

Re the title text, it sounds like Randall reinvented VOR navigation, only GPS based. There's gotta be at least some people on this board who get that, I can't be the only aviation nerd here. :P Consider it gotten. Add fake DME and you could probably actually find your destination, although you migh...
