Re: 1190: "Time"

I loaded up xkcd, saw the same first frame as everyone, waited, looked at the mouseover text, waited a little more, looked at View Source and this script (http://imgs.xkcd.com/static/time06.min.js), and then after about a minute it changed to a frame of the girl laying by herself and the guy looking...

Re: Remote fluid velocity sensor

LDV still requires seeding particles. Oh. :/ Again, what are you going to use this data for? Does it need to be time-resolved, or do you want averages? Do you need data over the whole domain simultaneously? The idea is to capture the state of a large volume of fluid at one time, integrate it forwar...

Re: Remote fluid velocity sensor

Sounds like you want PIV . It requires seeding particles, and can be a bitch to get working properly. It needs to measure air and water outside in the field, so there's no possibility of preparing the medium in any way. Thank you for the link, though; looking around a little I was heartened by this...

Remote fluid velocity sensor

Does anyone know if this exists or would be possible to build with any current means? An apparatus located at a certain place that can measure the velocity (vector) of the surrounding fluid at any arbitrary point (or a large grid of fixed points) around it, within a certain distance. It cannot just ...

47. It's prime, it's the atomic number of silver, and it's pretty: the four is green and the seven is red in my synesthesia.

Re: Flying.

F-f-f-f-f-f-aaaaaaaaake! [...] I'm beginning to question people's ability to notice obvious fakery. It is fake, but it took the CGI experts at ILM and Weta to prove it to me. The shadow of the wings disappearing might be plausible since the ground is uneven, but the sliding shadow of the guy on the...

Re: Flying.

Posted without further comment I thought I read that flapping wings for human flight was "proven" impossible. I would not believe this except that I can't think of a cost-effective way to fake the video, whether doing it in an animation program or having the guy suspended on wires from a ...

Re: icanbarelydraw.com ripoff, tribute or parody?

In any case, if they're trying to rip xkcd off, they forgot to copy the most important part: their mouseover text is just the title of the comic.

Re: centipedes and the Weird Things They Do

It took me reading the entire first post on this thread again and thinking I had read that story somewhere before, for me to realize that this was the whole loaf crumb thing and not an actual thread on centipedes. I have a few centipedes running loose in the basement. I must crush those things like ...

Re: Flying

After seeing some ads for Microsoft Flight and thinking it might be a good thing to try, I looked into it and found the rather superior open-source alternative FlightGear . Two particulars to mention: first, Jetman is one of the available aircraft. ;) Second, some of the graphical effects people on ...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

I'm afraid that my vision of college is too idealized. I don't have the heart to comment on this. Welcome! Wow thanks that's reassuring! I guess I'll just pretend I didn't hear that. Pffft, ignore RollingHead. Agreed. If you're the sort whose "hobbies are playing chess, skating, fiddling aroun...

But we are mired in semantics now. Sorry. :( Can't believe there's a thread about human flight without mentioning the Jet-man hisownself Yves Rossy . Short of some techno-fantasy, that's how I want to fly Yeah, he's amazing. I hadn't seen his TED talk before--it was good. Thanks for putting up the ...

Re: Flying

Also, this is something I've never understood: why isn't skydiving the opposite of flying? Why would it be? Either way you're still spending unusually large amounts of time at a height that would easily kill you if you were suddenly in free-fall. The only difference is that flying could actually se...

Re: Show the world your desktop! [Mommy, what's 56K?]

I added parameterizations for the positive color, negative color, zero color, and infinity color, so now I can make it any colors I want. I think you've beaten me. :) Glad I was inspiring though! Only remaining question is, do you hard-code the function into the program and run it to render it, or ...

Re: Flying

I always enjoyed flying, but landings scared me so I started getting out half way. Why would landing be scarier than skydiving? Also, this is something I've never understood: why isn't skydiving the opposite of flying? As for the idea of genetic manipulation, I doubt that will pan out. I remember r...

Re: Show the world your desktop! [Mommy, what's 56K?]

I was inspired to emulate your work. Green is positive, gold is negative, black is near zero. The color intensity scales as the hyperbolic tangent of the value, such that it turns white at infinities. :D I wonder what happens if you invert the colors in your image? Oh! You get the UK flag! (almost....

Re: Legend of Zelda - Skyward Sword

Just beat it (a couple hours ago). Some random thoughts: The final battle was, I think, too hard. Approximate number of game overs for me on each Zelda game's final boss battle: ALttP 6, LA 3, OoT 6, MM 0 (I did Fierce Deity), WW 1, TP 3, SS 25. Maybe there's just something I was missing. On the fir...

Re: Show the world your desktop! [Mommy, what's 56K?]

something like this, only it drew contour lines instead of using colors. WolframAlpha will draw this relation for you, but it just draws a thin black line where I have white. My way is much simpler (but much less elegant): just plug in the coordinates of each pixel, find the value of the right side...

Flying.

I've always wanted to fly. It seems other people do too. Do you? Why do you think this is? Any cool personal experiences? Discuss. Re: Show the world your desktop! [Mommy, what's 56K?]

Desktop.png Running Ubuntu 10.10 The background image is a graph of the relation 0 = 5 sin(1/y) - 7 cos(1.1/x) . I believe the domain and range here are about [-2,2], [-1,1]. The middle of the white is where the relation holds; yellow fading into white is when the right side is close to zero but po...

Re: Synesthesia: Do you have it?

And an amusing synesthesia anecdote: I used to know a girl who saw numbers as colours; always the same colour for the same number. Her mother also did the same thing... but they'd argue over what colour specific numbers were because they each had a different colour -> number mapping. When we were l...
