Re: 1402: "Harpoons"

The graph only goes up to 2020... the Whalers on the Moon might show up somewhere between then and 3000-ish.

Re: 1290: "Syllable Planning"

On tmesis:

Is anyone aware of research that's gone into the "a-whole-nother" phenomenon? It's used with enough frequency, and on credible enough English-language broadcasters as NBC and BBC, but beyond Wiktionary, I haven't seen it reported as its own thing.

This comic forges an uncomfortable cross-over between Winston Churchill and General Ripper from Dr Strangelove...

Cool, thanks! Will track it down... I was recently directed to a similar disaster scenario story, A Pail of Air, which is well worth a read.

Or you could just look up & see whether the moon and planets become an order of magnitude brighter over the next few minutes. If, that is, you didn't want to fleece the poor guy for his $50.

Re: What-if 0017: Green cows

Not quite. About 90% of the mass of a tree actually is carbon pulled directly out of the atmosphere. Water and nutrients are important, but for the most part, plants really are made out of air. This. Though I'd have thought about 40% by mass (lignin and cellulose being 6C:10H:5O~ish)...? I marvel a...

Re: 1107: "Sports Cheat Sheet"

With China's hundreds of millions of football fans, that right-hand column's a pretty good approximation. India's significant cricket-mad population *might* swing it around in test season, but I don't think AFL, Union and League put together would show up at all, sorry Commonwealth... karanj wrote: ...

Re: 1101: "Sketchiness"

Totally off topic, but hear, hear. I like the term "USonian", which I've heard attributed to Frank Lloyd Wright. He supposedly used it to characterize the native architecture of the USA, but it works as a drop-in replacement for the incorrect use of "American". I frequently use ...

On average, we humna can vertically jump maybe half a meter on a good day.

Humna - plural of humnum? Should I be offended?

Re: 1079: "United Shapes"

Reminds me of a Frank Chimero project (that looks like it's been taken off his website) - which has Hawaii as a bunch of asteroids in a starry sky: http://design.org/blog/states-illustrations-frank-chimero (feel free to make that a real URL, Mr Mod, Sir, I promise it won't bite) I have always though...

I assumed the "white tunnel" panel was the sun, as seen by the turtle on its back. But I saw the turtle comic first, so that's informed my umwelt, I guess... (http://imgs.xkcd.com/a1panels/a4a856e1f7316d4a3d94958aace6a6375f20e113a3c8a24cefe07c29a64a0f01.jpg) Australia, ff11.0/winXP = turtl...

Re: 0131: "s/keyboard/leopard"

This, and xkcd.com/321/ make working in church music way more enjoyable. A pipe organ contains one or more sets of pipes, a wind system, and one or more leopards. The pipes produce sound when pressurized air produced by the wind system is driven through them. An action connects the leopards to the p...
