Re: "DFS" Discussion

Interesting to note that the characters are less clothed when they actually have clothes (or towels) drawn on...the layout annoyed me too. I sat there waiting for something to flash up....but I was disappointed

Not sure if people consider it a masterpiece, but definitely classic. 'Dune', Frank Herbert. Just about to reread it too...

Re: Magnet and a block of metal

Place them end to middle. If there is an attractive force, the end of the magnet is touching the middle of the iron bar; if there's no attractive force, then it's the other way around. Either way you put them, there would still be an attractive force, as the charges in the iron would just r...

Re: Magnet and a block of metal

Not sure if it changes anything, but for simplicity, assume that the magnet is magnetised along the length of the block. I should probably also limit the shape of the blocks to rectangular prisms.

Magnet and a block of metal

Apologies if this has been solved/posted before... Suppose you had a magnet, and a block of iron (can be magnetised). Both look identical, weigh the same, etc. So you cannot physically tell them apart. Based purely on their interactions with each other (no wrapping a wire around it and trying to zap...

Re: blind man and carrom board

Taking a worst case scenario, it will take an infinite number of turns for him to get them all to the same state. That is, if the board is spun around, and ends up with the same two holes pointing towards him every time, so he will not be able to change the other holes EDIT: Realized i misread the q...

Geohashing Bumper stickers

Anyone interested in designing/printing a batch of them? I was thinking of a small sticker (maybe 100x30mm) with the xkcd logo, and "Geohasher" on it somewhere. Obviously, monochrome will be cheaper, so simple is best. EDIT: Or, alternatively, just some normal stickers that can be plastere...

Re: High Powered Laser Pointers Restricted in NSW, Australia

That still might not work, you could just stick something in the way every now and then to disrupt the beam.
Or if they make the signal v. high frequency.....
But still, every plane (or at least a large number of them) would need to be fitted with sensors to detect the beams
