Re: 1431: Marriage

If the US had similar requirements, they could set whatever guidelines they chose for eligability (age-of-majority, competency, etc) for their official government union, and then if people wanted to get married by a church they'd just need to find one that agreed. Of course, this would annoy a larg...

From the same link as I posted before, a chart based on polygamy would start at 7% approval in 2003 when Gallup started polling about it, and rise to 14% approval by 2014.

Re: 1431: Marriage

How can support for interracial marriage that be that small in the late 50s? That would mean opposition was not only near universal among whites, but also significant among African Americans. Is that correct? Details here: http://www.gallup.com/poll/117328/marriage.aspx The 1958 poll was whites-onl...

Re: 1399: "Chaos"

If you've had the misfortune to read the original novel, you might have some sympathy for David Koepp, the screenwriter not named Michael Crichton. Every Michael Crichton novel seems to feature an arrogant mathematician who exposes the author's complete lack of understanding of mathematics, and Ian...

Re: 1399: "Chaos"

I always thought that of all the ways screenwriters misunderstand science, interpreting "chaos theory" as literally "the theory that chaos will likely ensue" was one of the most painfully obvious. Like, did anyone, regardless of their background, hear that and not think "OK...

Facebook lost me when they made it difficult, if not impossible, to simply see all my friends' status updates in chronological order, most recent first. Please don't guess at what I want to see most; I wouldn't even want another human being doing it, much less an algorithm in this age of weak AI.

Re: What-if 0060: "Signs of Life"

The forest in Louisiana brings up the following interesting question: would forest that is not old-growth forest qualify as a "sign of life"? As a layperson, my understanding is that almost all forests in the eastern United States display evidence -- at least to the expert eye -- of having...

The sugar in soda and Cadbury Eggs isn't wonderful, but it's the 3.5g of saturated fat in a Cadbury Egg that scares me. At least soda doesn't have that.
