I work for a company that makes outdoor digital multimedia displays. I use Windows API, MFC, C++, C, on a daily basis, occasionally 8051 Assembly and vbscript.

My friend works as a programmer for Google, he uses only Java from what I'm told..

If I were you, I'd probably take an introductory Java or C++ class before I took the game development class. The reason being is that you will get so much more out of the game development class if you're not constantly struggling with the basic concepts of Java/C++ that you haven't even touched upon...
