Re: Medicaid Stimulates Economy More than Tax Cuts

Nor do I think the way the US and UK handled the recent crash was very noble: It represented the biggest transfer of wealth from the poor and middle-classes to the wealthy there has even been. The super-rich have made out like bandits while the poor have had their welfare payouts slashed and the mi...

Re: Can every debt be paid off?

Not in a fiat-currency economy in which every dollar you have in savings is a dollar of someone else's debt.

You could conceivably have a hard money economy with no debts denominated in currency.

Advanced economies have existed without usury and did until the 1500s, but debt still existed.

We have gender neutral loos at my uni. Men dont use them in case theres a woman in there, women don't use them in case there's a man in there. Theyre effectively trans-only toilets, and plumbing a toilet is a significant cost. Now you could imply that that's just cause most men and women are prejudi...

Re: Medicaid Stimulates Economy More than Tax Cuts

On the topic of the laffer curve, at least in the U.K we have empirical evidence of it. Before the last general election the Labour Party forced through a rise in the top rate of income tax to 50% (paid by those earning £50,000 or more - essentially well-paid professionals and up) as a poison pill -...

Hang on - there are people who think the use of sir or ma'am is disrespectful? Is this a quirk of American English? sir/ma'am sounds intensely respectful to me. To my ears the Senator sounds as if she's being a little petty (after the manner of academics who ask to be called "Doctor" or &q...

But, traditionally, you can't change the key. Not musical, nor Francis Scott. If theres only one high note people have trouble with it should be possible to slightly change the melody to something more singable without changing the key. As for the author of the music, and this is a tangent: Theres ...

Seems like the solution would be a minor change in the melody of that specific meter, not a wholesale replacement of the anthem.

Re: Should we change the national anthem?

I wouldn't want it changed if I were an American. Part of the point of patriotic traditions is to evoke an atmosphere of tradition and timelessness - connecting you with your ancestors and/or compatriots. Singing a national anthem is effectively a ritual in which you commune with the spirit of your ...
