Re: Math Websites

As I said, I kinda want to start from scratch, so I'll worry about more advanced topics later. From what I've seen, this site is exactly what I was looking for, thanks z4lis!

Re: Programming when you suck at maths

Thanks a bunch for your answers (and great links), everyone! Overall, it sounds pretty positive for me ^^ Which isn't to say I don't get willaaaaaa and Ben-oni's point for instance; ideally I'd like to have a deeper understanding of the theory and my newfound interest in programming/CS kinda goes ha...

Re: Math Websites

Could someone point me to good resources for basic to advanced maths? I know it's a lot to ask, but I'd like to find free online resources that basically start from scratch, and that are well-structured. I don't want to miss any building block of the greater mathematical knowledge, if you know what ...

Programming when you suck at maths

The title says it all, though I'd add that I'm indeed speaking of myself -- I suck at maths pretty badly, mostly because I didn't pay attention in class since it was so boring to me at the time -- and that by "programming" I mean "in Python" as that's the language the OCW course ...

Re: 1051: "Visited"

Nice one; as often with xkcd, there's a moment where I go "those are words, not pictures; is a comic really the best medium for this kind of things?", but I enjoyed it, so, who cares. Anyway, I'm wondering (not necessarily because of the comic itself): Wikipedia vandalizing (or, to use a l...

Re: 1050: "Forgot Algebra"

Science might be boring if you were never taught curiosity and exploring, but rather to do what you're told. The list goes on and on. I think it's worth than that. Curiosity shouldn't be taught, because humans are curious by default. I think bad teachers/education systems are actually breaking some...

Re: Someone is Creepy on the Internet

This, times a thousand. Stalkers are scary and creepy and weird and they think everything they are doing is perfectly normal and romantic . Those hundreds of pictures they've taken of the victim? Well, that's just because they're too shy to actually make themselves known so they have to find a way ...

Re: Parlons Français ! [French practice]

[French practice]

As for the third bit, I believe the reason we say République de Côte-d'Ivoire instead of République de la Côte-d'Ivoire is because here the " la " would also be inferred to put emphasis on identity and quantity of "Côte-d'Ivoire"s as items (i.e. it would make "Côte-d'Ivoire...

Re: 1048: "Emotion"

And, heck, why didn't xkcd itself ever take up any of his emotions? I don't agree with that. Today's comic is about the *causes* of his emotions. xkcd talks about emotions, or about things that provoke emotions, or what have you, but it's not necessarily a cause of emotions to Munroe -- it is to hi...

Re: 1044: “Romney Quiz”

I go with zoffenberger's interpretation here; I believe the key to that comic is the "is there even a difference?" line. That said... This comic is *lame*. Sure, it's a satire of media, but let's not kid ourselves. To those who think this isn't a political statement: may I remind you of th...
