Re: 1106: "ADD"

I really identified with this - but who wouldn't? We all have far too much on our plate these days, and life just gets more and more complicated. Please watch this delightful, thought-provoking TED video clip about a little girl who was thought to have ADD but fortunately was taken to a doctor who ...

Re: 1106: "ADD"

Wow, that's really weird that this comic should appear today. I suppose this should go into the SB help section of the forums but it's quite relevant to this. The time is 13:59. I have an appointment the other side of town at 14:00. The appointment was with an ADD specialist, evaluating my ability ...

Re: 1101: "Sketchiness"

Ok, pet peeve time: I'm okay with people born in the US being called "americans", since there seems to be no better options. But c'mon guys, America is a frickin' continent , with 40-something countries. And guess what, most of them speak Spanish  And the Spanish speaking population...

Re: 1101: "Sketchiness"

I'm struggling to think of something worse to add there than anything in the lines of "elementary school", "kindergarden", or "day-care center". Well, I think that depends on whether this is a Venn diagram situation where "felony" can overlap "sketchy,&q...

Re: 1101: "Sketchiness"

Now I'm pondering whether there are any non -sketchy blank-fillers, or if some or all of the sentence renders anything sketchy? Does "Hey, baby" in and of itself condemn the question? Surely it's not sketchy based solely on the "sex" content? Would "box" be more or less...

Did anything happen in this thread that would make reading all 63 (so far) pages of it worth the time of a liberal arts major?

They even used the kinesiology parlor trick where you push down on someone's arm while they're standing on one leg (Video Explanation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Piu75P8sxTo). I want the ceramic pendant in that video for what it says, which has a power all its own. Also, I can wear it more plac...

I'm probably to ignorant of science and English to fully understand this comic..? I'm inferring that you don't understand what is funny about this comic? I'm a native English speaker and have a fair understanding of both marketing and the science being abused, and I promise that understanding doesn...

The audacity of marketers cannot be overstated and can never be understated. As one of the people frequently tasked with bringing their promises into the realm of the real since 1986, I might be negatively biased.

Re: 1090: "Formal Languages"

I was a linguistics major in college, a programmer today, and fully aware of context-free grammars and what they are. And I *still* somehow didn't get this joke until it was explained. Guess I was looking for something deeper than a pun (though I do love me a good groan-worthy pun!). I've heard of ...

Re: 1090: "Formal Languages"

One of the best things about xkcd is that it helps one to identify (with great alacrity) the kind of geek one is...not.

And here I thought "formal language" meant never splitting prepositions at the end of sentences.

So, first reaction: if the bacon is a drug, there's less stress if you don't bring it home, but sell it somewhere and bring the dough home. Second reaction: oh, opioid = no stress. Plus, if duly prescribed by doctor, not illegal, which would eventually contribute to stress. Third reaction: for f#ck'...

Re: 1050: "Forgot Algebra"

I think the point is "proud". There's a big gap between proud and ashamed. You seem to be saying there's no shame in not knowing something; and in many cases that's completely true, nobody can be expected to know everything. But to then be proud of not knowing is perverse. Absolute knowle...

Rereading the comic this morning, I realized that the artist left out the only high school teacher I would ever sneer at: the sophomore year English teacher who gave me an F on my explication of TS Eliot's poem with the line about measuring your life in coffee spoons. Dear Mr I Can't Remember Your N...

It sounds like the kind of argument made by managers who always want to hire any College grad, when a degree isn't applicable or required, because it shows "they know how to learn and commit to something". Even though all it shows is that your parents had money, and you had 4-6 years to p...

First: I will freely admit to choosing my college major based on how little math would be involved, with special emphasis on not needing to know calculus. I was (and am still) in no way proud of that. Second: Those who are proud of never having been asked to solve for X either haven't been in the wo...

I am very glad to read that she's doing well.

Also, I can't stop running my eyes over the ebb and flow of what affects the artist's emotions, and how only Romance survives as a known quantity (not cancer related) for the future. Priorities get changed really hard by that experience.
