Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Do Objectivists believe an objective value of 'goodness' exists that can be rationally derived? Or do they understand that all values of 'goodness' are subjective, ownership is an imaginary thing we made up because it's nice to own things, and all moral values and decisions are based on assumptions...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

So, look...I'm happy to answer questions about Objectivist ethics. Yet I ask a number of direct questions about your Objectivist ethics and receive no response. Sorry; I'm happy to answer honest questions from people who are nice . Not people who's purpose is just to pick a fight, or who call me a ...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Hehe, it didn't even get one page without devolving into philosophical discussion. Also, throwing this out there: if you say that Objectivism is a responsible, moral code of ethics, I can pretty much say you're wrong. For instance, with regards to Mr. I have a successful business and am a nice, mor...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

I've seen nothing from sanjavalen that gives me enough information to claim he's an asshole, and way too many people here are shoving words so far down his throat that I think his esophagus has probably ruptured by now. I'm fine; you get used to it, being an Objectivist. Every community has at leas...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Well, I had a business meeting and then a great birthing class with the wife. I come back and I am, to be honest, a little amused. Since I was gone, I have been called: 1. Asshole 2. Liar 3. Parasite (Did I miss anything? With scant evidence to back up these assertions. Then there was the literary d...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Actually, Rand did reject empathy - friendship and love are only possible towards other ubermenschen in her world, that is, it only counts as love if it is towards another ubermenschen - to love or even like a 'parasite' would be to fall victim to altruism - this of course, is one of the many reaso...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Again, isn't that a positive message about the world? I am acting selfishly, in the sense that all of my actions have, at their heart, my own happiness as their goal. I think its a great thing to realize that if I approach it that way I don't have to choose between the happiness of others and my ow...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

As far as my personal story, its a very pleasant one that has (and continues) to teach me just how benevolent and helpful people are, in general. I haven't been fighting against parasites, just building my business and trading (and learning) from other people. I happen to think that's interesting a...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

I don't think you understand what people are objecting to in this thread. Nobody cares about your life outcome individually. Nobody seems to be asserting "All Rand-fans are failures at everything." The point is that Rand-fans tend to support policies that are detrimental to society as a w...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

I won't comment on the literary evaluations, but exactly how do you explain someone like me if Rand's philosophy is just this collection of horrible ideas and awful, evil things?I've been living it for a decade now, and am comfortably beyond my teens. Married, child on the way, lots of happy friend...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Yay rebuttal time! :) Who are you rebutting, exactly? I didn't see any of this up there. It's a few pages back, in response to an earlier post of mine. The overlap between rational self-interest and welfare is actually quite high. The system the US has (and the US is more capitalistic than most) di...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Excellent comic, especially the subtext. I find it quite true - Rand's ideas can be very attractive at first, especially to teens just starting to explore their own independence and rebelling against what may or may not be arbitrary authority. I came across her first through Rush's 2112 , still one...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

I'm hesitant to get involved in this conversation, but the one comment I'm willing to make thus far is this: Ayn Rand is not a philosopher, any more than Robert Heinlein or L. Ron Hubbard. They are all fiction writers, whose characters and plots push viewpoints on philosophical subjects, which the ...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Pushing people around is precisely why Ayn Rand condemned the Nazis, and the Soviets, and any other, smaller-scale bully, and is not something that any Objectivist should be okay with. I'm sorry if people who call themselves Objectivists have given you a different impression, but it simply isn't so...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

ANY Randroid I've ever heard questioned on their philosophy usually gets to "I've got mine and if you don't have yours, it's your own fault and you should f off and die." Sure they pretend to be nice and all about "personal responsibility" but that's an easy position to take fro...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Okay. Funny comic. Keep it up, Randall. Though I'll admit that I'm hurt (a bit). For the record, I'm an objectivist, and usually not an asshole. The obligation to "be a huge asshole to everyone" seems to be a conclusion that many reach about Rand's philosophy. I never read that part, I gu...

Re: 1049: "Bookshelf"

Howdy, I'm new (obviously) and registered in response to this latest comic. Take a breath. I'm not going on an angry rant. It did make me a little sad, though, as I am happily married, involved in my local community and have a beautiful baby girl on the way. It felt very...wrong, to see the philosop...
