Re: Nomenclature of chimeric antibodies

Wiktionary (unfortunately can't link yet) suggests that it was chosen both for Greek "chi" and because the X represents the idea of "crossed/mixed cell lines". Ah, thanks, your google-foo seems to be better than mine. Here is the link for posterity: https://en.wiktionary.org/wik...

Nomenclature of chimeric antibodies

So today I learned about the nomenclature of monoclonal antibodies https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomenclature_of_monoclonal_antibodies . Before that, I thought there was no system to it and found it horrible to learn, but now I see it is quite nice with the stems and substems. I especially like the ...

[Physiology] Colour vision, name of optical phenomenon

There is some psycho-physiological phenomenon related to colour vision the name of which I can't remember. It is a photographic image that looks like it has all colours of the visible spectrum in it. But when you examine it with your image editor of choice, you see that it only has pixels from a gra...

Re: Diagnose random freezes (Linux)

Install smartmontools, then run smartctl -H /dev/sda as root. It should give a simple PASSED / FAILED message. This gives a PASSED message. I also did a full smartctl -a /dev/sda on the crashy machine (~4 years old) as well as my laptop (~2 years) and compared these two. The current error number in...

Re: Diagnose random freezes (Linux)

So, quite late, but an update. I removed the nvidia graphics card and purged all of its drivers. This seemed to fix it, but now I am getting the same freezes as before. There are still no errors in the logs. What could I check next? Harddrive? I know it has "SMART"-capabilities, but I don'...

Re: Diagnose random freezes (Linux)

Try to run diagnostics from your BIOS. This is a hardware issue, as it is present across multiple platforms and programs and also leaves no logs. Browsed through the BIOS, but found nothing that looked like diagnostics tools. Is there anything that can be run from linux or some live CD? Memory's ea...

Diagnose random freezes (Linux)

I have a Linux box that crashes quite often without giving any clues what might be wrong. This behaviour ist consistent over different OSs: First Ubuntu (upgraded since 9.04 to 12.10) and now Debian 7 + KDE. The machine boots up normaly, login via display manager also works but after starting an app...

Hm, I read pretty much everything by Lovecraft but I don't get the connection. Could anyone enlighten me on this one?

Thanks!

http://what-if.xkcd.com/imgs/a/54/mars_curiosity.png Instead of being sad forever, like Spirit, here's a rover that's briefly very happy! Re: What-If 0053: "Drain the Oceans"

But of course the real question is: Can we drain the water all the way down do R'yleh? The scenario reminded me of HP Lovecraft's story "Dagon" quite a bit, except it would be the other way around (Ocean gets drained vs R'yleh rises due to volcanic activity). Walking on the drained ocean f...

I agree, the "fun part" (e.g. fractals) starts after what you learn in school.
