Re: What-if #0094: Billion-Story Building

Is there a mistake in the text and/or the penultimate image?

The text says:

we have to stack 10 mega-mega-MEGA-skyscrapers on top of each other, to make one Keira-skyscraper:

But the image says "100 mega-mega-mega skyscrapers."

Re: 1146: "Honest"

I had to force a reload (Ctrl-F5) to get today's comic to show up - before that I just kept seeing Monday's. Anyone know why that would be? Not behind a proxy here. A bad cache setting last time I looked at it?

Self-indulgent, sickly sweet, and just lovely. Although, yes, the "mushroom cloud" did make me wonder what science Mrs Munroe was doing. Also I like her hat.

Re: What-If 0020: Diamond

Is it just me, or is the scale a bit off on Randall's illustrations? When it hits the ground, two minutes after it was released, it makes a crater 300 meters across—the size of a school, shattering into fragments in the process. http://what-if.xkcd.com/imgs/a/20/diamond_1.png That dinosaur's about 1...

More worrying is this; turns out one judge has decided that the assumption is so worrying that they won't accept its use in court...even people who get it don't get it... http://www.guardian.co.uk/law/2011/oct/02/formula-justice-bayes-theorem-miscarriage In mitigation (your honour): And so he decid...

Re: 1132: "Frequentists vs. Bayesians"

What this tells MDs is to ignore rare diseases. Mindsets like this are lethal. I hope you won't take offence, and I'm sorry for your losses and the circumstances surrounding them, but to say this mindset is lethal seems to me to be a generalisation along the same lines as "cars are lethal"...

I would subscribe to a Twitter feed that supplied you with one reasonable sports opinion per day, like 'The Red Sox can't make the playoffs (championship games), but in last night's game their win seriously damaged the chances of the Yankees (longstanding rival team).' IT Crowd did it! https://www....

Re: What It: SAT Guessing – wrong basic assumptions

You still haven't answered my question: how do you determine that something is just a regular certainty? Do you just know? A certainty simpliciter (an "actual certainty" or "regular certainty" if you like) is something of which there is no doubt... By contrast, a perfect score o...

Re: What It: SAT Guessing – wrong basic assumptions

What I meant by "actual certainty" was really just "certainty." I was only using the word "actual" to distinguish it from "statistical certainty," the definition of which I'm still unclear on - unless the word "statistical" is used here to mean "...

Re: What It: SAT Guessing – wrong basic assumptions

My quibble with this What If is this bit:

it’s a statistical certainty that there would be no perfect scores on any of the three sections.

How is a statistical certainty different from an actual certainty (which this isn't)? Is there a particular definition for this phrase?

Hi all, Long time XKCD reader, first time posterer (to the best of my hazy recollection). I was only thinking to myself the other day that you can wait years for an affectionately scathing indictment of graduate education set to the music of Gilbert & Sullivan, and then one comes along at once -...
