Re: 1970: "Name Dominoes"

Matching Garnet with Ruby and Safire seems a bit of a stretch. Under those rules Chevy Chase would be a match for Harrison Ford. Judges? Garnet, I assume, refers to the character who is a fusion of two other characters named Ruby and Sapphire. Jack Ma and John Adams is a head-scratcher too. "W...

Re: 1602: Linguistics Club

The big problem seems similar to the case of less/fewer or literally/figuratively, where it's such a common mistake to use annual to mean ennial, that annual has started taking over the definition of ennial, leading it to hold two contradicting definitions. So then biennial = semiannual? Actually, ...

Re: 1602: Linguistics Club

You're partly correct. Sesqui- meaning a period of 1.5 units, annual meaning year. So 1.5 years :D Yes, but not "every 1.5 years", but rather "1.5 times per year". Can I get a citation on that? http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/questions-and-quandaries/grammar/bi-annual-...

Nah, he was only never selected because he's under age 30, makes less than $100,000 a year, isn't afraid of flying, and hasn't watched porn in the last 12 hours.

Yes, what I am doing is discounting the ties. I'm calculating the probability as (x wins)/(x wins + x loses), rather than (x wins)/(x doesn't win).

Dice Probabilities

If rolling x dice and y dice, is there a formula for the probability that the total of the x dice is greater than the total of the y dice? Of course, any time x = y, the probability will be 50%. For (1, 2), the x die beats the y dice in 20 outcomes, and the x die and y dice tie in 15 outcomes. There...
