I was lurking in wait to get the first reply... sadly, I had ample time to create my own thread... but I did not.

Re: java URL object get giberrish from xkcd

Also a few notes for you after glancing at your code. If you are learning java - first, get Eclipse IDE over notepad - as much as I like writing code in vi, Eclipse is a godsend for novice and expert alike. Also, by convention all java identifiers are "CamelCased" with class names startin...

This can be easily done in a few lines of shell script, Java seems way overkill (unless you are practicing your java or something.)

Pretty much just practicing java =P

And I'll try using an InputStreamReader instead, and see if that works.

Re: How to Save a Life

I've donated a lot of blood, but I don't know for sure that it actually saved anyone's life. I've performed CPR on dozens of people. That should count for a few, even if many of them didn't make it. Oh, yeah. I almost forgot that I donated a kidney. I'm pretty sure that one counts. Why can't there ...

Re: java URL object get giberrish from xkcd

The function you posted works fine for me. Could you post the rest of your code (preferably in a spoiler tag if it's long)? For reference, here's the code I used to drive it: public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { System.out.println(slurp(new URL("http://xkcd.com/#/").o...

Re: java URL object get giberrish from xkcd

I plagiarized this method that converts what the URL objects .openStream() method returns into a String that can be printed. public static String slurp (InputStream in) throws IOException { StringBuffer out = new StringBuffer(); byte[] b = new byte[4096]; for (int n; (n = in.read(b)) != -1;) { out.a...

I've moved this thread in here because it seems that now the OP is slightly more interested in working out/sharing the code for coding's sake. Feel free to move wherever you wish. -- hermaj I made a thread about this in the "The Help Desk" and in the "Site/Forum issues" boards, ...

Re: Page returns Giberish to java URL object

It works fine if I run the program JUST as the comic is updated, which I have coincidentally done twice. But before and after that it doesn't work, heres some test output. (I cut out much of the SMBC page source to keep it short, Im sure you get the gist of it anyways) ***SMBC comics*** <html> <head...

Page returns Giberish to java URL object

Basically, I wrote a simple java program that uses a URL object and the .openStream() method (and a method that changes the InputStream to a String) to get the page source info for "http://xkcd.com/#/". Then searches the string for the current comic's URL ("http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics...
