Re: What-If 0033: Ships

Wouldn’t the inversion of this question be more “what if-y”? What happens to the ships if you take away the sea? All of it. Ships would find themselves suspended kilometres above the sea floor, the air above them rushing down to fill the vacuum left by disappearing oceans. The seafloor leaping up wh...

unless you're talking about maybe a working model suitable for destroying model railroads and built on a scale of around 1/48 or so. Well, there's my project for next summer! I only have a sketchy idea how a trebuchet works, but what better way to find out than make your own mini medieval weapon of...

Would a jet-pack AK still need the barrel or is it just dead weight? I assume you’d need at least a bit to properly accelerate the bullet.

Re: 1119: "Undoing"

This reminds me of a story I read a while ago about a company in Europe (I think it was France) that was shining lamps (fossil fuel powered) on photovoltaic cells in order to get subsidies or tax credits. Supposedly they were able to make money this way. Can't find a link, my google-foo is failing ...

Re: What-if 0015: Mariana Trench Explosion

Well that was... predictable. Nuke the Mariana trench and get no effect. “Well that didn’t work.” Supersize it and get a Mythbusters level destruction. What I’m more interested in is the Freeman Dyson memo that Randall mentions, it looks like it would make an interesting read. http://t2.gstatic.com...

I never understood the furor over bundling IE with Windows. What was actually wrong with that? Everyone acts like it took away consumer choice, when in fact you could use IE to then download Mozilla or Chrome or whatever and use those instead. Just because something is there doesn't mean you have t...

Highway engineer prank #62? Actually this one made me shiver at first, it looks horribly dangerous. If I ever had to go trough this I'd do my best to pick the second lane from the right. It only does two weird things and seems to be mostly green. Also I don't get all the hate for roundabouts, they w...

Reminds me of this Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge adventure by Don Rosa, where gravity is magically (due to a curse by Magica De Spell) shifted first sideways and later upside down for the ducks, and the consequences are explored in cool and insightful ways. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Matter_of_Some...

And all of this assumes, of course, that we don't simply figure out a way to rejuvenate our Sun. Per Wikipedia, the Sun burns 600 million metric tons of hydrogen every second. If we could find a way to rejuvenate the Sun so we could use it all, the Sun would last us 3.3x10 18 years; 3.3 quintillion...

Wow, this was/is epic.

It was like “I don’t get it”

“oh, it moves!”
“It is big!”

Also I found raptors… one classic and one of them feathered ones.
