Re: Given that you have a brother...

This problem reminded me of the Monty Hall Paradox, whose Wikipedia page, aptly enough, contained a link to the Boy or Girl Paradox.

The answer as far as I can tell:
Spoiler:
You're both right!

Re: Lease Renegotiation

Did a Google Search on "game theory rent negotation" . Not the goldmine I hoped for. But I did find this nugget on the subject of lease-renegotiation: This paper analyses the effect of potential lease expiry on the rental negotiation process and levels of rental agreed. Several observers h...

Re: A Game Theory Approach to Lease Negotiations

In many university neighborhoods, the rate of move-ins outside the traditional summer season is much lower, so a 6-month lease is worth far less than a 12-month because the second half of the year, the odds of finding new tenants goes down. Good point. In my case, this isn't a university neighborho...

A Game Theory Approach to Lease Negotiations

So here's a real-life logic puzzle of sorts: I'm currently looking for a new 1-BR apartment closer to work. I want to sign a 6-mo lease but as you probably know most agents quote at a discounted 12-mo rate. I figure the fact I am ready to move in immediately has some value that should allow me to co...

Re: aesfail.org: SNAFU Involving a Student Loan Payment

I sent another email to their customer support and asked the matter to be escalated. I'm not sure if it actually got escalated or not, but I got an email the next day from Justin apologizing, acknowledging the problem, and assuring me there would be no penalties. That's all I wanted to hear. Thanks ...

aesfail.org: SNAFU Involving a Student Loan Payment

Not sure is this is the best forum for this, but I need to vent (rage face here) and, well, if I hadn't gone to college, none of this would have ever happened. Also, I would welcome any advice for getting AES to own up to their mistakes and to make sure this matter doesn't bite me financially. TL;DR...

Open Source Grammar Parser

Has anybody played with any open source natural language parsing libraries they liked? I'm interested in something that can parse a passage or sentence into its grammatical units and determine if it is grammatically (or determine the probability that it is grammatically correct). Python is preferred.

Re: AT&T DSL - Slow Connection / Capped Broadband?

Without knowing AT&T's specific policies on shaping downloads there could be a number of things that both caused and fixed the issue, from what I've seen of US phone lines (and it isn't much) there may have been a minor break in you phone line at a cable join, most copper phone lines will have ...

AT&T DSL - Slow Connection / Capped Broadband?

This issue has been resolved, I guess. But I'm looking for insight as to what really happened. Here are the details: I have had AT&T Basic DSL plan for over a year now. It's ~350kbs down/~750 kbs up. It's never been great, but I'm a pretty light user, just internet surfing and moving files back ...

Re: Need Nintendo DS Advice (Health Related)

To return to topic, I ordered a few games earlier this week. The first two arrived today: Fire Emblem (GBA -- recommended by person132) Age of Empires (DS) Both are turned-based sort of strategy games. I gave them just a quick go as I haven't gone to the gym yet, but both look like just the sort of ...

Re: Need Nintendo DS Advice (Health Related)

Thanks for the suggestions all. I'm going to pick up Professor Layton. Advanced Wars also sounds kind of interesting, though I'm not a big war game buff. Never heard of Phoenix Wright, but this looks intriguing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Wright:_Ace_Attorney To those who said work out har...

Re: How can I get fitter over the summer?

If you detest the gym, then I'd say use it as a last resort. In my experience, The two biggest reasons people quit workout programs are 1) lack of interest and 2) injury. If you want to balance your upper body with or lower body, I'd recommend either swimming or calisthenics. Very true. I think the...

Need Nintendo DS Advice (Health Related)

I've been going to the gym (24 Hour Fitness) 4-5 days a week for about 9 months now. Best shape I've been in in years. But, my god, is it boring. Especially the running/cycling machines. Last month I bought my grandparents a Nintendo DS Lite with Brain Age 2. I thought it was fun and maybe even help...

Re: A Pythonic Tribute to xkcd

This could be a very good time for one of my favorite lambda tricks (wrapping ever term in a list and then taking index 0 at the end) By the way, that's a neat trick. I'm going to make a note of that. Please don't double post (post two comments without any intervening ones). You can edit what you w...

Re: A Pythonic Tribute to xkcd

But I think the simplest way (although which does not get to benefit from any short-circuit logic) is: xkcd = lambda x,k,c,d: c.get(k,d.get(k,x)) Well done. Someone at the office eventually spoiled my fun by pointing me to dict.get(). But, by that point, I'd thrown off the bonds of any earthly rest...

A Pythonic Tribute to xkcd

I had a little idle time at work today, so I ginned this up: #!/usr/bin/python """ a pythonic tribute to xkcd http://phosphorusandlime.blogspot.com/2008/06/pythonic-tribute-to-xkcd.html """ xkcd = lambda x,k,c,d: (({k:False},d,c)[int(''.join([str(int(k in t)) for t in [...
