Re: 1667: "Algorithms"

As the guy from nebraska who made the excel spreadsheet I take offense. The conversation goes more like this. Me: Hey guys look at how you can organize the data if you collect and normalize it. All you need to do is put this into a database so you can get even cooler stuff. Whatever you do, don't us...

WORST. XKCD. EVER. I logged in for the first time in probably 3 years to share that. Ya same here, As a father of 4 (adopted children) I am stretching to find alternative meanings: 1. Analogy to the ethical problems with abortion? 2. As the story of Kal-El's youth parallels a familiar biblical stor...

Re: Bombing at Boston Marathon Finish Line.

I just saw this on the news, but they are saying the bombs were possibly made by pressure cookers. I find this interesting and relevant to the forum considering last week's What-If. Has anyone heard any more on this item? Start with this post on the previous page of this thread. Thanks, my skimming...

I remember in college I could tell you what year in college a person was by how they dressed. Freshmen had all the new clothes and were looking their best, Seniors didn't care and were still wearing the clothes from 4 years ago or intramural shirts...<P>My Freshmen orientation was so hot I said &quo...

As a parent I have noticed it is incredible the lack of scientific thought that goes into choosing how to raise children. The homeopathic stuff is a good example, people will use gripe water for everything, for what reason? What study has been done to show it is better than an actual formula for set...

Ok to start with as a physics hobbiest I find fun in solving simple problems I see, odd things just catch my curiosity such as the example of Feynman and the dinnerplate. I'm confused why this thread is titled "life" and it's about humanity. Seems like a terrible title for the thread. I chose the term life for the subject of the thread to avoid confusion that I was starting a thread about moral issues that are obviously tied to the question at hand. More in...

As far as I can tell, the real question your asking; When does another entity deserve the same level of rights that I expect to be accorded? I mean, is someone 'less human' if they are born with severe mental difficulties? I think this is an excellent example of what we are getting at here. Having someone tell you what to vote certainly goes against the principle of free will (which is a doctrine of many religions). Actually it is perfectly fine within the concept of free will to let someone tell me what to do. I, for instance, could choose to vote for whoever Garfield is telling me t...

As the first Prius driver to chime in, I have to say that it's pretty nice to be cruising down the road and looking at 50+ MPG. The nice thing is that the tank is relatively small as well, so when it is time to fill up it's not too painful. I don't think I've ever spent more than $35 on gas. And I'...

Yeah, you're wrong. It is incorrect to say that mathematics alone predicted the existence of atoms. Physics uses math as a tool, but physics is not a subset of math. I agree with you, but for the sake of argument (which seems to be popular in this forum). Could it have been done without math? Perso...

Yes, but can mathematics be used to predict the existence of atoms, photons, etc.? No, it doesn't, but that's OK! Math is still awesome! The laws of physics cannot be derived from mathematical reasoning. Experiment is necessary! This is a very important distinction![/quote] Umm I could be wrong but ...

Re: "Purity" Discussion

No discipline is really more important than the other... I would hope that we're talking about purity, not importance of application. Purity can be defined better by emergence. For example, the laws of chemistry emerge as a consequence of the laws of physics. As do the laws of biology from the laws...

Re: "Purity" Discussion

So the purity can probably be translated as fundamental. What is the basis for all science, what does it all come down to in the end. What can we all lean on for understanding and a common ground? Really it is math. And while it is pure because math only can be described by itself, it is not feasab...

Yeah, this comic is kind of funny, but it sidesteps the real issue (the alt text helps a little, though). What does purity have to do with anything? What does purity mean? If it means living in an ivory tower of abstraction, why should that even be something to be proud of? Why doesn't everyone jus...
