Re: Islamist attack on Orlando gay club

This was an Islamist attack, motivated by Islamic ideology and that religion's deep hatred of homosexuality.

I do not appreciate some mod changing the title of my post because of some misguided idea of Basic Human Decency.

Edit: The word replacements are fucking bizarre on this forum.

Re: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality

Regarding Mcgonagall knowing Hebrew, it is possible that Hebrew is a particularly useful language for advanced magic users to learn. Perhaps a lot of early magical research was done by Jews, and so a lot of spells are in Hebrew (I remember a few instances in MoR when obviously non-English spells wer...

I've heard that the low ratio of jobs available to people with phd's is significantly worse for theorists than experimentalists. Is this true? Any idea what it's like for astrophysics specifically?

I don't think that's a mass ratio. I read it as the number of gas giants is twice the number of stars.

"Living dumb creature" is a weird definition of animal anyway. First, it applies to some humans. It would seem to not apply to some non-human primates at least, possibly other animals too (not sure, IANAB). Are plants not also living dumb creatures?

The thing that annoys me about the burial at sea is that it will fuel all the crazy conspiracy theories about him not really being dead. Really, just bringing him back and letting people see the body would have prevented some of that.

Some branches of Satanism are based on that very idea; that Lucifer is the hero of the story and God is cruel. It'd be an interesting concept to play with. Well, I'm pretty sure that in the bible Yahweh killed way more people than Lucifer. So the idea isn't without merit. Apparently they're also go...
