I'm a European medicine student. I can confirm that about 2/3rds of my fellow med students are female (stats, not just my own year at my own uni). This is actually a huge upcoming problem for our healthcare system, as said female doctors take a registry number and go to work. The country has previou...

Re: Science of Weight Loss (split from Feminism)

No it's not. There are three crucial differences: 1) Pyruvate is absorped by the cells as glucose, whereas ketone bodies are already ketone bodies before entering the cells. 2) "To burn glucose" is a term that, while technically incorrect, is used to describe the entire catabolism of gluco...

Pedantry on your pedantry: The brain can burn fats, they just have to be converted into ketones first. Ketone bodies aren't fats. Fats are a good substrate for the pathways that make them, but ketones themselves aren't fats. @ Meteorswarm: that's interesting. Would you know how that fatty acid gets...

Alright, first of all, I am not a medicine nerd. I'm a bit of a chemistry nerd, but medicine is, well, something I only know a few things about. Re: Feminism (split from 'nfessions)

I never said it was easy. Ever. I also never said that the body doesn't want to protect it's energy reserves. What I said is that you still hold the key there. Your body can only slow down basal metabolism up to a certain point. If you keep using more energy than you take in, the body has no choice:...

Re: Feminism (split from 'nfessions)

If you go on a 1100 kcal diet for months on end and actually stick to it, and exercise regularly, it's physically impossible not to lose weight. Yes, conservation of energy guarantees that you'll lose mass if you consume less energy than you use. That doesn't mean it's safe or reasonable to do that...

And that is still bullshit. I guarantee you that it is possible to lose weight through diet and exercise no matter who you are. Proper affirmative action doesn't work that way though. What it's meant to do is make sure that you (and I) as a white male need to be at least as good as a minority applicant, not that you'll have to be significantly (in the non-statistical sense) better. That said, I know of a few examples of affi...

Yes. It's bad that innocent people can be convicted of crimes. It happens with all crimes. In the case of rape, there is physical evidence in some instances but not all. I agree. The fact that this will allow rapists to get away with it is most regrettable, yes. It's not necessarily trickery though. Trickery implies intent, and it' possible that the woman didn't really think of the fact that perhaps the children weren't his, and likely that she didn't know for sure even if she thought of the possibility.
