Re: 1277: "Ayn Random"

So there's a puzzle: how can you make an honest living performing this undoubtedly valuable social service? (And not just protecting people from each other, but feeding the poor and healing the sick and all the other things people are calling on your for these days). That was the main puzzle I was ...

Re: 1277: "Ayn Random"

I'm trying to build a tower and asking "hey can anyone help me figure out how to make this sturdy". Some people come by and knock it down and laugh at how sturdy it wasn't, and how stupid it is to try to build it in the first place. What was foolish was in trying to fight them and hold up...

Re: 1277: "Ayn Random"

Either I am really tired or you are really smart. Maybe both. Can not make everyone the same. Can ease suffering. Can not make everyone's situation the same. Can make cultural abandonment rare or nonexistent. Is that anywhere near correct? That's correct, but not all of it. Let's see if I can't exp...

Re: 1277: "Ayn Random"

"Withdraw from government" means "not be subject to its rules". I don't want my neighbor to be able to withdraw from government and set up his own rules, because then he could do what he wants, and I could not. And right now you can do what you want and he cannot, and somehow th...

Re: 1277: "Ayn Random"

By "property" I mean a physical object, and by "do something with" property, I mean physically interacting with it. To own property is to have these deontic relations to that property: ⋅ you are permitted to do anything with it that you like ⋅ all others are ...

Re: 1277: "Ayn Random"

ok. How much of the US is at War? Define War, again. For us non PoliSci majors. Nothing you wouldn't expect; when I say war, I mean war in terms of the States in question using physical force against each other. This includes cases where one of the parties chooses not to fight back, so long as it r...

Re: 1277: "Ayn Random"

Agreed, but it's not so much a concept of a Government forcing people to adhere to the standards of their competition, as not being able to tolerate the competition at all. After all, it's fairly trivial for a single State to serve multiple Governments... it's no problem for the independant suburbs ...

Re: 1277: "Ayn Random"

Having read over this thread... I really don't see any way for you to have co-located competing governments and have that make sense. You might get close, in the Snow Crash sense, with little anarcho-capitalist minisocieties springing up all over the place in very close proximity, such that you have...

Re: 1282: "Monty Hall"

Do you know if the host was always going to offer you the switch? Because if the host knows where the prize is then he could only offer you the switch if the host knows you are already on the prize, in the knowledge that a smart player will always switch. Other than that, this has been seriously he...
