Hah, fair enough! Just be ready to have to explain your own personal language here and there.

Re: 1732: "Earth Temperature Timeline"

(Unless you're a meaniehead and you just want to argue online. Then it is immensely useful). When did "meaniehead" come to apply to something other than people who argue about topics related to social science/social justice? I've seen it used twice today to refer to people on the side of ...

Re: 0919: "Tween Bromance"

I think we're already beyond the point where the verb "to google" refers specifically to the Google search engine. really? what other uses are there for it? if someone said to me that they will google something i can only assume they mean they are going to search for it online via google ...

Re: 0917: "Hofstadter"

Meta information is the stuff that is not said explicitly. I'm not sure that's quite what is implied by the term meta . My understanding was that meta -information is information about the information . The term is used often in technology to refer to data that is given to help understand other dat...

Re: 0850: "World According To Americans"

Fair enough, but the alternative that is usually presented (that there is an absolute, divinely inspired/enforced moral code) doesn't really mesh well with me, since depending on who you talk to, you get an entirely different Truth. I'm fine not using "morality" to refer to the concept I p...

Re: 0850: "World According To Americans"

What basis, then, for morality, under an evolutionist perspective? Without God, morality is relative and defined according to whim I like to think of "morality" as merely a useful cultural abstraction. It isn't absolute and definitive, but it certainly isn't defined "according to whi...

Re: 0899: "Number Line"

What has been said is that "0 x infinity" isn't a meaningful operation, since "x" is an operation that is not defined for "infinity" (at least not within the context we're discussing here). The people who are attempting to educate you here aren't just mindlessly repeati...

Real numbers aren't considered to be "sequential". The set of reals is not a sequence.

Re: 0899: "Number Line"

The lim(2.2, 2.22, 2.222, ...) = 2/9. So 2.2(2) = 20/9, or 2 2/9 0.8(8) works the same way, and actually = 8/9. Again, the principle concept here is that no two real numbers are "close to" or "next to" each other. They are either the same number, or there are infinitely many numb...

Re: 0863: "Major in the Universe"

One advantage to a core curriculum spread out over all areas of study--it allows the students who don't quite know what they want to major in (which seems to be well over half of all students) time and exposure to the various possibilities so they can decide before they get too many unusable credit...

Re: "One Two" Discussion

You are well within your rights to declare that one field of study is not interesting to you, but trying to declare it "not real science" because its "Realness Level" is below that of the "Real Science" as measured by your personal Geek-o-Meter is just plain arrogant. ...

Re: "One Two" Discussion

When you insist that people who disagree with your definition of "funny" need to grow a thicker skin, "can't take" a joke (as you repeatedly say), simply don't get it, and so on, you're saying that your perception of humor is the correct, objective one. Some who says "that'...

Re: "One Two" Discussion

No. What makes these guys (and female comics like Lisa Lampanelli) so funny is that they are funny . They "don't give a damn" because they are willing to go beyond boundaries in order to get the funny. Their jokes say something true that makes us laugh and say "yeah, that is so true,...

Re: "One Two" Discussion

What makes these guys so funny is that they don't give a damn what anyone thinks, including their audience. It's all well and good if you didn't find it particularly funny, but trying to call it out as bad comedy is a joke in itself. If you actually took grave offense to this, my only advice would ...

Re: "One Two" Discussion

I think this whole comic, title-text and all, is hilarious. Good comedy doesn't (and shouldn't) try to fit within any boundaries - even the audience's boundaries. I'm amazed that someone in this thread tried to reference Bill Hicks as an example of good comedy when bashing the title-text. Go watch s...

Honestly, I wouldn't use any sort of 'petty revenge'. It's... well, petty. Really, imo, the only thing you can do is keep quickly tracking and banning him. The trick is to a: track and ban his account quickly and b: keep at it. Eventually he will get bored and leave. Hopefully. How's he getting pas...

As for names, he had a pretty uniform account name approach, but one of my admins d...

phpBB User Banning

Ok, so I've got a pesky user who has worn out his welcome, and he seems determined to prove his e-thug-ness by use of proxies or an anonymizer of sorts to continue posting and spamming our public board. What would be an effective solution for keeping him away (if there is one)? Assuming an effective...
