Re: "Generalized" polygons?

Can't be a simple rotation; if it were, there wouldn't be a separate term in the sequence for it.

Re: "Generalized" polygons?

Interesting! Is there any physical meaning to, or representation of, a polygon with negative sides?

"Generalized" polygons?

Hi all, In my copious free time I often enjoy wandering around the OEIS learning about various sequences. There's one set that has caught my eye recently, but I'm having trouble understanding it: the concept of a "generalized polygon" - the " generalized pentagonal numbers ", the...

Re: 2016: "OEIS Submissions"

One of the sequences was approved: https://oeis.org/A316599 Being the sort of oddball that I am, I can't help but be amused that they changed it to Arial because Helvetica is "proprietary". Do they think Arial is in the public domain or something? 'Cuz it ain't. An objection that was rais...

Re: Keyboard issue

So a couple of days later it just started working properly again. It even took me a while to notice, because force of habit and muscle memory prevent one from realizing that keyboard shortcuts weren't no longer working. So I'm guessing there was some droplet of water or something that was stuck in t...

Re: Keyboard issue

Nope. They're not swapped. Right-ctrl just acts like I have a second tab key.

I pulled off the Ctrl key and cleaned out under it but no luck.

Re: Keyboard issue

I don't remember anytime specific that I used the right control key as opposed to the left, but I use keyboard shortcuts prolifically (and often while walking around with the laptop, so one hand is gripping the laptop and the other is pressing the shortcut) so I can't imagine it will have been more ...

Keyboard issue

Hi all, Today I turned on my laptop to discover that my right Ctrl key thinks it's a Tab key. Pressing right-Ctrl acts like Tab in every way, in every program. No other key is acting incorrectly. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling keyboard drivers, rebooting, all the standard stuff. And then I decide...

Re: What-If 0150: Tatooine Rainbow

Interbinary, not intrabinary.

Inter means between. Intra means within.

I guess an intrabinary planet would be one where the suns pull on the planet equally so it doesn't move at all?

Re: 0247: "Factoring the Time"

Nice catch on my mess-up. The description is necessarily more long-winded and complicated in text than it is when you're used to doing it. That's also the reason I messed up. My thought process when running through it in my head sounds something like this (dividing 406 by 7): 406 40 6 40 6 times 2 m...

Re: 0247: "Factoring the Time"

Reading this thread years later, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the generalized prime factor test. It works for any prime factor except 2 and 5 (whose cases are trivial). If you want to know if x is a prime factor of y, do the following: A) Find the lowest multiple of X that ends in a 1 or a 9. If...

So I started work this morning and was surprised to discover that the document is already in .doc format, not .docx.

That surprised me, to say the least.

Re: Bizarre Word behavior

If you want to be really safe, paste it first into Notepad, and then copy from Notepad into a new Office document. The reason for Notepad is that you may still have control characters in your text that, while they don't appear on the page, could potentially cause the schema to have issues again. No...

Bizarre Word behavior

Hi folks, In the past few weeks I've been working with Office 365 for the first time and a document that I have edited with Track Changes, sent out, and received again with additional changes is acting very strangely. When opening the document, it opens by default in Simple Markup mode, which it sho...

Re: Two probability questions

It's not homework, and I haven't tried anything yet - it's merely an interesting question that came up in the course of my work. And unfortunately I'm a technical writer, not quite a programmer or a mathematician, so I'm not really qualified to even know really where to start.

Two probability questions

If I have 4 binary strings of 32 bits each, what are the chances that any two of them will differ by exactly one bit?

What if I have 4 binary strings of 16 bits each?

Re: 1155: "Kolmogorov Directions"

At some point while living in my old apartment I noticed that it had a very amusing location in Jerusalem. Whenever someone would stop me outside my apartment and ask how to leave the city and get to Tel Aviv, I'd ask them, "Do you want the short way or the simple way?" The short way was r...
