Re: 1800: "Chess Notation"

I didn't get it. Here's some hints. The subtitle "½ - ½" means the game (i.e. the conversation) was a draw (no winner). The "??" in the title-text indicates that this move (i.e. Cueball's pronouncement) was a blunder - a very poor move. The commentary above, "(!!)" indi...

Re: 1649: "Pipelines"

no apparent surviving date info anywhere on top, the side or the bottom. I think some of them may be older, still, but I'm not sure.) I'm sure it's not true but I've heard the trivia tidbit that "honey is the only food that never spoils." In any case Smithsonian reported that archeologist...

Here's a chart which shows all the different things the US government counts as "petroleum"

http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_cons_ps ... mbbl_a.htm

And the last line is "Misc" which includes 31 million barrels per year.

Re: 1649: "Pipelines"

It just occurred to me to contemplate what I'd have to use the title-text smoothie for if it were to replace all the constituent components in my daily life. Bathe with it, use as a condiment, etc.

Also, I wonder what my daily allotment would cost?

Re: 1649: "Pipelines"

Actually talking about honey makes me think, some of these are both produced and consumed in the United States. So which is it? Petroleum seemed like an easy one to look up: Production (2014) 3,178,555 Thousand Barrels. Exports (2014) 1,524,170 Thousand Barrels (Note these include products like Kero...

For an XKCD-person (is there a name for such a being?) it's actually quite large.

Re: 1649: "Pipelines"

The flow rate assumption seems like an awfully big one.

Could someone clarify: Is the upper chart "actual size" or the lower one?

Edit: My best guess is "the upper one" and the human has been given for scale in the lower chart.

You're welcome. I failed lots of different ways too. Probably the reason I posted anyhow is genetic.

Well, I tried to post the current google source code in a reply, but I couldn't manage it. Too many characters, plus it gets flagged as spam.

Re: 1421: "Future self"

This panel reminded me of the Calvin and Hobbes sequence when Calvin built a time machine to collect the evening's homework from himself, at bedtime. When bedtime-Calvin hadn't done it either, they decide to go visit mid-evening Calvin, since it was obviously his fault it wasn't done. Edit: Can't po...

Re: store banner

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I know the banner changes from time to time, however I seem to remember (and I may be mistaken) that whatever was in that spot was replaced if there was a comic-specific note. Of course, sometimes it was a message like "There's a new blag entry" or "Order by...

Hi, I've been rereading all the old XKCD strips as I do every year or two. (Helps me be one of those people in comic 16, but with XKCD instead of Monty Python.) I have this memory that there used to be occasional extra content (a link, explanatory comment, etc.) in the header and that those items we...
