Re: "Contingency Plan" discussion

Hey guys, I just lurk here and this is slightly off topic, but there seem to be people here who know what they are talking about. Are hypoglycemic attacks a potential symptom for diabetes? My research says no- everything I can find says they are basically the opposite of diabetes (i.e. when you hav...

Re: "Contingency Plan" discussion

I have Type I diabetes. This comic illustrates perfectly how people misunderstand what the disease is, how it is caused and treated. There is no cure for either type, for type I there is life support in the form of insulin without which I'd die in 10 days or so from DKA (where the body being unable...

I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself.

On-topic: I think the comic's funnier because of the misconception. Anyone with me on that?

Yes... I think it's funny due to the misconception. Funny because it's NOT true, even.

Re: "Contingency Plan" discussion

My point was that there is enough mis-information out there without this comic adding to it. Diabetes is an easy target precisely because so many people fail to understand it. Intended or not an insult is an insult, the author is clearly an intelligent, well educated man and I am disappointed that ...

Re: "Contingency Plan" discussion

I don't know why everyone thinks that Randall got the science wrong here. It's clear to me that the male (biology major) in the comic has genetically engineered his child to not develop beta cells in its islets of Langerhans. This modification has the result of producing an insulin requirement in t...

Re: "Contingency Plan" discussion

Of course, this is entirely inaccurate. You can't get insulin-dependent diabetes from too much sugar :P Actually, you can't induce diabetes of ANY kind from too much sugar. Type 1 is genetic, and Type 2 (or 'onset diabetes') is still not understood well (although it appears to be linked to obesity ...

Re: "Marshmallow Gun" Discussion

Entirely unrelated, I'm sure... but somehow I felt this was a throwback to the "tickle bazooka" as introduced by Joel in an MST3K episode... thereby increasing its ha ha rating in my opinion.
