What about the end of the last ice-age? I've heard that could have been a cause for sea-level rises. There are flood stories in many cultures - all over the world, not just Mediterranean ones. there's nowhere on earth that would allow someone to, on foot, walk from sea level to that altitude in the timeframe the comic has so far suggested.
