Re: "Dark Flow" Discussion

Re: The science behind this. (I can't take the time to quote everyone above). I was reading some paper about this because work was slow this morning and google is amazing. They linked the paper itself and then a critique and subsequent refutation by the authors. I'm not great with this stuff, but th...

Re: "Steal This Comic" Discussion

It evolved out of fears that the powerful and wealthy would steal or otherwise exploit the hard work of others without the creator receiving any benefit or even acknowledgement. So you agree that file sharing has nothing to do with the original intent of this weak law. I was referring to copyright ...

Re: "Steal This Comic" Discussion

Information IS free and always has been. It's just when a post-scarcity world clashes with a scarcity-bound economic system that we get crazy problems with no solutions like DRM software and intellectual property. More on that: Scarcity is really the issue here. Computers essentially make informati...

Re: Microwaved coffee?

The french press route that has been suggested is the way to go. You can get a plastic one at target for about $12 and microwave the water in there, then just pour in grounds and use the plunger. It makes better coffee than most filter pots, but it tends to be a bit on the dark/rich side. Also, the ...

I didn't see anyone mention it yet, but the Boxhead series by crazymonkeygames are some of the most mindlessly addicting flash games ever. Zombie Apocalypse!!!!!!

Re: "Fiction Rule of Thumb" Discussion

It's a shame Newspeak was specifically designed so that you can't say anything worthwhile in it. Otherwise I would be all up on that learning it as a language

It's completely worthwhile if you want to understand politics or high-level corporate interactions.

Re: "Fiction Rule of Thumb" Discussion

Randall only pointed out the correlation; he never said made up words = doubleplusungood. Card is near the good end of the spectrum, the man needs no exceptions, I can feel that in my aiua. And I know I'm going to get reamed here, but Tolkien isn't that great. Has everyone forgotten how painfully bo...

Re: How'd you come up with your username(s)?

I'm new, so I guess this is the place to introduce yourself. Long time reader, first time caller etc. My name comes from the title character of one of my favorite books; The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (there are, indeed, lit nerds who read this stuff too). It seems......fitting.

Re: Roommate Relations

My theory has always been that if you trust someone enough to let them share a home with you, you have to trust them to use your stuff without breaking it. Of course, trust can always be broken, and sometimes you find a roommate out of necessity rather than choice, but it's a good general principle....

Re: Boy Thread: All the good names were taken

As a coffee shop regular, I can say that there are conditions to it being manly. Whatever you drink should be large and hot. It takes a real man to down 20 ounces of near-boiling liquid in 90 degree heat. Other than that, everything is fair game. Coffee shops are where you go when it's inappropriate...

This is the one area that I'm basically a curmudgeon. Leave the damn thing on vibrate and keep it in your pocket. We all have pockets, phones are tiny, and you never miss a call when your crotch starts buzzing. Everybody wins.
